XP sees network, doesn't see gateway

Hi:
I have a home network set up with several computers.
My ADSL connection is through a gateway connected to a switch, which
connects to all the computers in the system. Everything works fine in
the LAN, and all the boxes have internet connectivity.
Recently I added a WinXP Pro (SP1) box. There's nothing on it except
the OS, IE6, and a run of windows updates.
The new XP box connects to the LAN ok, but I can't get it to see the
gateway.

Things I've tried:

-- control panal/network connections/set up network wizard, trying
both the "...connects through a gateway" and "other/connects through a
hub" (which is the most accurate selection).
--The XP firewall is disabled.
--Under internet options/LAN settings, "automatically detect
settings" both on and off.
--I've compared the settings for internet options, and tcp/ip to the
settings on the other boxes, and made them all identical.
--If I try the CD which came with the gateway, I get an error saying
it can't find it.
--If I type the gateway's IP into Internet Explorer to set it up
manually, I get a "page cannot be displayed".

The one other thing I noticed -- when I first set up the XP box, I was
able to get it onto the network and to the net. After downloading the
20 or so critical updates in one batch, I started having the problem.

Ravic,

What ADSL service do you have? Are you paying for single or multiple (how
many?) IP addresses?

What brand and model is this switch? The gateway? Does either provide a DHCP
server?

How many computers do you have successfully connecting? A list, using assigned
name, and OS name and version might be useful.

Please provide ipconfig information for the new WinXP box, and for one working
box.
Start - Run - "ipconfig /all c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in
Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

From each computer for which you provided ipconfig:
1) Ping the other by name.
2) Ping the other by ip address.
3) Ping itself by name.
4) Ping itself by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
Report success / failure of each of 10 pings.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Solved it:
Since it was a homebuilt machine with all new parts, I took an
inventory of all the hardware.
The memory stick turned out to be corrupted. A replacement stick, and
a bit of time to reinstall the OS from scratch, no problems since.
Seems like every problem I had in the past year has been memory
related.
