Default Problems With XP Fax

I have a strange problem with XP Fax Services. I am using a Dell XPS410 with
XP MCE SP2 with all security and Hot Fixes up to date.

I can successfully install Fax Services, configure and use it. I can send
Faxes with no problems. I can send Faxes from MS Word.

However, after re-booting the computer for the first time after the install
certain Processes will hang for several minutes before functioning. Things
like IE 6 and Add/Remove Windows Components will just sit there doing
nothing.

Process Explorer shows no activity except for System Idle Process. When what
ever is hanging is finished you see changes in the Processes in Process
Explorer and everything is then normal. I looked at the Event Viewer logs
and there are several Error and Warning events listed.

I tried fiddling with the Fax Services configuration but this doesn't make a
difference. I tried disabling Trend Micro I.S.

Any ideas?

Rich

I may ahve solved the problem. There was a lurking Brother (Long gone
Brother Laser printer) Print Spool Driver being called for in Services and
the Intel Quick Resume had something to do with it also.

Default Problems With XP Fax

Do let us know if you come up with an actual XP Fax issue. As I said before,
this is not likely to be an XP Fax issue since it has never been reported so
far.

Default Problems With XP Fax

The problem only occured with the instal of XP Fax and was sort of print
related.

If you dig into Window Services and look at the Dependencies for Fax you
find that one of the items listed is Print Spooler. The presence of the
lurking Brother Spooler was causing the problem because the Brother
spooler.exe file no longer existed and the system was doing its time out
thing looking for it as well as the active HP one. I hadn't tried Fax
services since uninstalling/removing a Brother HL-1440 and installing an HP
LJ 1020.

Brother has a separate Uninstall program on their website for removing
hidden print driver files that aren't removed by their Uninstall through
Control Panel or their software. Seems similar to Symantec with Applications
to remove lingering traces of Norton Antivirus and Internet Security.

Thank you again for the advice.

Fax Services always rely on a print spooler. That's why I asked you to
examine Event Viewer straight away so you could find conflicts in that
arena. Glad you did. Glad you found it.

If you power the printer off and then on again do these lights still blink, or
do they only blink when you try to print?
If the lights are on when you power the printer on you have a paper jam, check
the door at the very back of the printer (many people don't know it is there),
open it and look for a piece of paper there. Check under the cartridge and make
sure paper is not stuck half way out of the tray.
If they only come on when you try to print then either
1. There is no paper in the printer.
2. The paper is not being picked up, probably a worn feed roller. A mission to
change on these printers but you can try to clean it with warm water (damp
cloth only with power turned off).
