Default Computer Freezes on Windows Boot

Hi Everyone,

I had some issues with malware and viruses and ran Norton Anti Virus, Super
Anti Spy and a program called Remove it, which someone suggested I use in
another newsgroup. I now think I have got ride of all my viruses and spyware,
however now when I restart my computer it freezes at the windows screen and
the blue status bar just keeps running and running. I can start the computer
in safe mode; hence this post, but I don’t know how to resolve the problem of
the computer freezing on start up.

I would be grateful for any help on this matter.

Thanks a million in advance.

Either the machine is still infected and/or the infections damaged the
operating system. You can go through some more thorough malware removal
steps to see if that fixes things or you can back up your data and
clean-install Windows since a repair install is not likely to work. I
recommend doing the clean install, but that is of course your choice.

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to do
all scans in Safe Mode. Please see the special Notes regarding using
Multi_AV in Vista.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV - instructions
http://tinyurl.com/yoeru3 - download link and more instructions

You can also check to see if there are targeted removal steps for your
malware he
Bleeping Computer removal how-to's -
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html
Or he Malwarebytes malware removal guides - http://tinyurl.com/5xrpft

When all else fails, get guided help. Choose one of the specialty forums
listed at the first link. Register and read its posting FAQ. PLEASE DO NOT
POST LOGS IN THE MS NEWSGROUPS.

If you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be
aware that not all local shops are skilled at removing malware and even if
they are, your computer may be so infested that Windows will need to be
clean-installed. If possible, have all your data backed up before you take
the machine into a shop.

Answered in another newsgroup. Please do not send the same message
separately to more than one newsgroup (called multiposting). Doing so
just fragments the thread, so someone who answers in one newsgroup
doesn't get to see answers from others in another newsgroup. And for
those who read all the newsgroups the message is multiposted to, they
see the message multiple times instead of once (they would see it only
once if you correctly crossposted instead). This wastes everyone's
time, and gets you poorer help than you should get.

If you must send the same message to more than one newsgroup, please
do so by crossposting -- sending a single message simultaneously to
multiple newsgroups (but only to a *few* related newsgroups).

Please see "Multiposting vs Crossposting" at

Hi
Have a look at Event Viewer, it may give you a clue if a particular program
is causing the computer to freeze.

there are a variety of things
that can de stabilize windows
and may seem that there is
an infection at play.

for example, a service could
be enabled which should not
or a device is failing or mis
configured or whatever...

the causes for windows becoming
unstable are many and just
not due to infection(s).

if you found safe mode performing
well, then i would suggest the
clean boot method to normalize
normal mode.

the above is simply one attempt
to begin the process of eliminating
the cause of :

in all fairness, if you were
actually infected and the
infection was removed, then
it would be highly likely that
you would have also needed
to repair your windows system
via your windows cd.

: )

the repair method is a
pretty good suggestion
but the clean boot might
be a better one.

because if safemode is
functional, then the
repair method may
be futile.

give a REPAIR install a try.

it might just work.

if not you still have the option of a CLEAN install.

Hi Bill ,

And others helping with this problem.

I am still working through the problem/s and thanks for your help and
suggestions. I did have a look at the event log and there are loads of
"warning, information signs and exclamations marks and sadly none of this
made any sense to me.
