Default Help with Sound Problem

I can get no system sounds or music from Media Player. I've checked the
Device Manager and there are no exclamation marks indicating a problem with
a device. The sounds are not muted. The light comes on on the On/Off speaker
(which I assume means that the speakers are plugged in).
The dxdiag test shows the following error:
DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of
software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)
Can anyone help me to get my sound back?
Thanks.
