If I shouldn't use a registry cleaner, what can I do?

WinXP Home SP3. I'm installing a school package that has installed cleanly before under XP and under Vista. Now I want to install it temporarily on the XP machine while the Vista machine gets reincarnated. I get an error code 0x00000643 which indicates a registry problem. Google tells me all about registry cleaners that will fix this problem, but all the MVP's recommend against using registry cleaners. What other options do I have? See Patrick's answer. Other options include manually going through the registry and deleting leftover associated keys, and contacting the support group for the package. More information on the identity of the package and where the information pointing to a registry problem came from, would probably be helpful. HTH -pk |

If I shouldn't use a registry cleaner, what can I do?
You could install Erunt, then print out a copy of how to recover the
registry it fails in the event of a catastrophic registry boot failure. Erunt saves a copy of the registry on reboot, which can be recovered if it all goes wrong. I have in the past used ccleaner But the primary place to asertain what is going wrong is with the support from that school package "BudV" BudVitoff@(NO)att.(SPAM)net wrote in message ... You are confusing ads that appear on Google with the search engine. Ads are known to be biased. :-) Give us the complete text of the error message as well as any pertinent information on this "school package." We should be able to guide you to a solution. FWIW, I would imagine most registry "cleaners" wouldn't address your particular problem anyway. |

Can you please post a complete copy of the Error Report? Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48 hours ago. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. -- Hope this helps. Gerry ~~~~ FCA Stourport, England Enquire, plan and execute ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BudV wrote: WinXP Home SP3.
