Default Bootable optical drive question

We have a Sony DRU-720A (latest firmware JY08) DVD-RW on a Windows XP Pro
SP3 Intel P4 1.8GHz 2GB RAM 250GB HDD machine.

It is set to be the first boot drive in BIOS.

We noticed that some bootable discs do not work on this unit though they
boot on other PCs. But other discs do boot up as expected.

'Non-booting' examples are Window 7 and Ubuntu 9. They work perfectly
elsewhere.

Could a drive have an issue like this? It does not have any other 'problem'
that we found. Unfortunately, the warranty period is over.

Regards and TIA for any insights.

Yep as the laser might be slightly out of alignment and not read the boot
track properly

Thanks for the responses. We do agree that the unit itself may have some
irreparable small defect - we are replacing it as soon as we can.

Regards and thanks again.

Some bootable disks require you to press a key to boot from that disk. If
you don't press the key it just boots the PC as normal. Windows
installation discs all do this. I can't speak for Ubuntu because this is an
XP group.
