Default Search causes trouble if stopped when item found

Windows XP Pro SP3 - using search from 'click on desktop and hitting F3' of via
Start/Search, it will work if left to itself but I have masses of information
and the target for the search may be on any Disk/Partition in C-K totalling 1.2
Terrabytes. If found and I click Stop the computer hangs.
I can help things along if I search each partition and the program comes to
natural end but this is my main computer and I should like for it to behave
while I have two sons coming and they are both Mac fanatics. They are bringing
their iphones 'instead of using the old steam driven computers'

Please help urgently
Borge in sunny Perth, Australia, changed as danish characters does not work for everybody
