Default If I shouldn't use a registry cleaner, what can I do?

WinXP Home SP3.

I'm installing a school package that has installed cleanly before under XP
and under Vista. Now I want to install it temporarily on the XP machine
while the Vista machine gets reincarnated.

I get an error code 0x00000643 which indicates a registry problem. Google
tells me all about registry cleaners that will fix this problem, but all the
MVP's recommend against using registry cleaners. What other options do I
have?
