Suggest you check the KB2619340.log, located in Windows, for a possible
clue to the installation failure, Jim.

Since this is a Security update you can also seek "no-charge" support
from Microsoft for the installation issue -

" How to obtain help and support for this security update
For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY
in the United States and Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. For more information about how to contact your local
Microsoft subsidiary for support issues with security updates, visit the
Microsoft International Support website:
http://support.microsoft.com/common/....aspx?rdpath=4

North American customers can also obtain instant access to unlimited
no-charge email support or to unlimited individual chat support by
visiting the following Microsoft website:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?&prid=7552 "

The only hangup about contacting MS is that they are "evolving" User
support options and "no-charge" support appears to be becoming extinct.

In this case, evolving means that MS is reneging on their previous
offers of "no-charge" support for the cleaning of Home Users infected
systems and may include the installation of Security updates. With MS,
one never knows as they don't even know.

Default PHEW thanks: Failed Windows Update

Dear Mowgreen & Peter,
Many thanks for your prompt responses to my posting.

Had alook at the KB2619340.log - but got rather mind boggled!
[happy to send a copy if you would like one]

Couldn't find a way of accessing Ms support without giving them my credit
card details!

But - following your links came accross "MicrosoftFixit" - tried the
default mode several times
It found and fixed some errors BUT still no success installing the upgrade

then came accross this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910339 [a clear
and not too techy set of suggestions] and so:

Tried installing in safe mode
got the message
KB2619340 not able to backup registrykey
HKLM\Software\MicrosoftUpdates\WindowsXP\\\SP3\KB2 619340 to file
C:\windows\NTUinstallKB2619340$\reg00003. 87:the parameter is incorrect

RETRY and it carried on
BUT still no joy.

Eventually ran MicrosoftFixit again in "let me select the fixes to apply"
mode.
(though the link above didn't recommend it!!)
It found and fixed "another problem" - but then ran on with no manual fixes
suggested
AND after this

The upgrade reqirement does not list on reboot OR on running Windows Update
on the web
SO - I hope it's now ok
!!!!!!!
EXCEPT that it doesn't show as having been updated successfully on the
Windows Update page (show history)

ERR - should I carry on living in hope or investigate further do you think?
!!!!!!!

Default PHEW thanks: Failed Windows Update

Jim,

I'm busy with out of town visitors and don't have the time to boot this
system to XP Media Center ... but, what I've seen from perusing the
drive it's installed to is that the update replaces a .dll, specifically
- Encdec.dll version number 6.5.2715.5512

It's copied to system32 and system32\DllCache.
There's an .inf file copied to
WINDOWS\INF\KB2619340rg.inf

It's installed, registered, then unregistered -

Starting process: C:\WINDOWS\ehome\medctrro.exe /f
C:\WINDOWS\INF\KB2619340rg.inf UnRegister

The information in the registry that shows the update has been installed
is located at

HKLM\Software\MicrosoftUpdates\WindowsXP\\\SP3\KB2 619340

There should be a file list, that shows Encdec.dll has been
replaced/updated.
If those exist on your system then the update has installed.
When I get time later this week ( Thursday ), I'll boot to MCE and see
if it shows in Add/Remove Programs.

Default Failed Windows Update

Seems as if quite a few people hae had recent problems with some recent Xp
mediacetre edition updates flagged by the MS update system

What seems to work in general is to down laod the updaste from Ms Download
[eg Google msdownloads KB2628259 - the id of the failed update shown
when it fails]

Download the update onto your machine and save it.

Then double click the saved file (what is called a manual update)
If an error message is displayed in a message box then click Retry.

This generally seems to result in a reported successful install

If commputer doesn't automatically reboot then reboot anyway.

Go to MsUpdate
http://www.update.microsoft.com/micr....aspx?ln=en-us

If you list you update log the success is not reported.

HOWEVER if you carry on with the Update system it no longer lists the update
as required -

So one assumes that the update was successful.

Default Failed Windows Update

Is any of this because of MS UPDATE pushing out
updates that require the newest installer
without first pushing out that installer?

Did MS ever even fix THAT little piece of genius?

Had this problem a lot, and used the 'manual' proceedure for 1/3 of the
'required' updates when I went to Xp X64 a year a go, aggerbaiting but
surmountable problems
