Default DeskJet 882 printing errors

I have repeatedly had problems getting documents to print
in XP. This printer worked flawlessly with Win98. Got a
new computer with XP Pro.installed and have had nothing
but problems. Printer connection is USB. I went through
the "Troubleshooting" process and got no results. I have
reinstalled the driver from the Microsoft website twice
now. The printer works for a while then suddenly, for no
apparent reason, I start getting the "error printing
document" message. What is going on here? Is the driver
with XP defective? Is there another one? It says to not
use the driver that came with the printer, but to use the
newer one with XP. This printer is listed as one
supported by XP.
