defaylt paper size--hp laserjet 4000 tn

i have an hp laserjet 4000tn with two paper trays. it
worked fine until a week ago when i downloaded some
windows and hp updates. now, the default paper size is
legal. before, the printer automatically selected the
correct tray. when i try to change the default size, it
keeps reverting back to legal. what to do.
