Default Router / Modem TCP/IP not responding

Having set up the router/modem to connect to the Web ASDL.
ran for 6 weeks till i tried to set up a network using the
router. the laptop runs win 98. all up and running the
laptop and Xp machine can communicate, win 98 can access
the router set up, but XP will now not go through the
router to the internet. if i ping from dos packets are
sent and recieved, but from Windows only packets are sent
to the router but no response is recieved back. so now i
cant access the router from the main xp machine. does xp
have a means of blocking comm from the router?

Jorgan,

Is your Internet Connection Firewall enabled (Local Area Connection Properties -
Advanced)? Check TCP/IP Properties - Advanced - Options.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "ipconfig /all c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in
Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Cheers,
Chuck

Jorgan,

Is this a wired or wireless router?

Some software firewalls interfere with services even when disabled. Try un
installing Mcafee firewall.

log onto the internet simultaneously on my DSL router.

Excellent, Ed. Thanks for the update.

Jorgan,

Is Owner the computer with problems? For comparison, please provide ipconfig
for the other computer too.

Owner should be getting settings from the router. Try enabling (TCP/IP
Properties) "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server
automatically". Then rerun ipconfig for Owner too.

Chuck,

Owner is the XP comp, and the detail shown under that
heading never seems to change. the items under the second
heading do change and reflect what ever i have entered
into the TCP/Ip setup. if i use the auto select, it picks
up addresses not relating to 10.0.0.2 (router gateway),
and seems to be very busy on the WAN side of the
modem/router, but the recieve packets remain nill. I'll
get the info over the weekend. Do i have any way of
checking why the 'Node type:' comes up as "unknown"?

Jorgan,

OK, let's see what Owner shows for ipconfig when you enable DHCP on it. That
should tell us where the problem lies anyway. And the ipconfig for the other
computer will be very useful too.

Node type is a very mysterious setting. Unknown is a normal value, the only
problematic value would be Point-to-Point. Here's the official from M$:

Hi Chuck

Thank for you perseverance, I did uninstall the firewall
but not the virus protection. I have now uninstalled the
virus protection and problem gone. All this struggling!!
And can kick myself. Having said that though now that I
am trying to reinstall just the virus protection, it comes
up with an error but doesn’t tell me what it is and when I
try to update it from the vendor McAfee, it comes up with
another error1 I’ll follow this up with them.

Thanxs again

Hi Jorgan,

Glad to help.

An integrated product like McAfee AntiVirus and McAfee Firewall probably has
hooks between the two products, so I guess it's not impossible that one would
cause problems with the other. Good job on trying such a long shot, glad it
worked out. I'll note this solution for future advice.

Thanks for letting us know what the problem was.
