New Windows network setup - XP SP2 and 2000 Pro

I'm attempting to set up a new Windows network with two computers, one a
Win2000Pro and the other an XP Home machine. After following all the
documenation and the running the appropriate wizards, neither machine can see
the other. I've tried to follow all the other posts and do my homework. Still
need help! Appreciate it!

Each box can ping the others IP address through my Linksys router (I'm using
a broadband cable modem direct connected to the router for internet access).
The XP machine can ping the machine name of the 2000 box (3927-zzpf2orpl2)
but the 2000 box couldn't ping the XP box. I added the XP machine to the
hosts file on the 2000 box, and now they can both ping each other, IP
address AND machine name. That might be a clue to my problem, I don't know...

Both use the MSHOME workgroup name.

I'm running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks on each computer, with shares setup on each.

I'm running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer.

XP HOme is SP2, firewall has exception checked for File/Print sharing. No
firewall on the 2000 box.

When I attempt to "Find" the 2000 box from the XP box, using either IP or
name for the 2000 machine, it fails to connect.

I've run net user guest /active:yes on each machine and rebooted, to no avail.

Running
-net view \\3927-zzpf2orpl2

results in this:

-System error 53 has occurred.
-The network path was not found.

and vice versa from 2000 to XP.

Computer Browsers and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helpers services are running on both.
I've waited many minutes to let browsers catch up.

With all of this, did you create identical user accounts and passwords
on each machine? You need to. Make sure you've shared out desired
resources and that permissions are set correctly (read/write as you
want).

Try disabling the Guest account and creating the user accounts. XP uses
"Force Guest", but it is IMO bad network security to have a Guest
account enabled. Other operating systems such as NT, Win2k, Linux and
Unix disable the Guest account by default. If you have a mixed-os
network, you definitely need to disable XP's Guest.

Thanks, of course, you are right. I've been in debug mode. I had planned on
setting up accounts.

addrs and their hostnames (I did have to add the XP hostname in the Win2000
hosts file, thought), but windows networking doesn't recognize either
machine. I never even GET to signon (another reason I didn't bother with
accounts at first).

Both OSs are BRAND NEW installs, why doesn't this work right out? Thanks

I don't know. Networking is usually pretty easy, but hard to
troubleshoot in a newsgroup. You've got something set wrong, but
without seeing your machines it is really hard to say what. Go through
the troubleshooter at MVP Hans-Georg Michna's site he

Hans-Georg Michna

and then post back with results. Or you may just want to call a local
pro to come over and do it. Someone onsite is going to be able to take
a look and go, "oh yeah - here you go" in a lot less time than this is
taking you.

If you want to keep trying in the newsgroup, go through Hans-Georg's
troubleshooter and then come back.

Don't give up, you'll get it working.

I had IPX (NWLink) installed (even though it wasn't checked). Uninstalled
that and now the two machines are talking!
