Upgarde to Widows XP Professional for NTFS Security Problems?

Would it be worth spending $200 to upgrade one computer to XP Pro on order to
fix a write permisson problem I have with a USB Hard drive connected to a
Dlink DNS-120 USB to Ethernet network adapter. The drive when formmated as
multiple FAT32 logical drives (34.4MB max) can be written to and read from.
However, when the same drive is formmated as NTFS I get "Access Denied" when
trying to write to it. I can read files written to it when it was attached to
the USB port of my computer. I've played with as many ways as I can to change
the security, but I can't find a way to change the permissions when it's
attached to the network. PLEASE HELP!

Before you go spending money I would check with the manufacturer of the
device and see if it's made to work as you want it to - I'm guessing it's
not and no upgrade will make it do so.

Are you formatting it with the PC and then attaching it to the DLink box? I
imagine the Dlink box wouldn't know what to do with the SIDs created by the
PC.

Yes. That's the only way I can format it. The DNS-120 will not allow
formatting of a drive attached to it. At least that is what Tech Support
tells me. Tech Support also told me I have a defective unit when I used
CompuApps' SwissKnifeV3 to format the 250GB drive as one FAT32 partition. I
just formatted the drive using Western Digital's Life Guard utility with
eight 34.4GB or less partitions and they work flawlessly. So the DNS-120 is
NOT defective. BTW it was a Level 2 tech that said it was defective. I just
sent a message to a Level 3 tech to see what kind of reply I get from him. I
also suggested Dlink provide a partition utility, since Windows XP
comaptibility is touted on the box and to the best of my knowledge, XP does
not format a USB drive of this size as anything but NTFS.

I'm actually very surprised it worked at all. Not sure how this device can
read an NTFS file system.

I didn't know XP wouldn't format a drive like that as FAT32. Did you try
the command line format with the /fs:FAT32 parameter?

DLink does say on their website that the device won't work with an NTFS
disk.

I just tried what you suggested and was told that the drive is too big for
FAT32 by the format tool. I will try to find the max size. The SwissKnifeV3
must not have a lock on how big is too big.
