Limited Users Can't Use Internet Connections
Using Windows XP Home
================ I have two internet, network connections - 1 DSL, and 1 dial up. They work fine from administrative user accounts, but not from limited users accounts. If I log into a limited users account and then click on Start, Connect To, and then click on one of those two network connections they do not work. What do I need to change so that my limited users can access the internet? (Making them adminstrators is not an option. |

Limited Users Can't Use Internet Connections
Hans,
Thank you for your suggestion. I tried it, but it did not work. When I log into a limited users account, click the "Start" button, then click "Connect To", and then left click on the DSL connection nothing happens. If I right click on the DSL connection, "Connect" is grayed out or disabled. That's even after I followed the steps which you prescribed on your web page. - Dan R. Dan, what happens when you create an entirely new connection and enable the "Save this user name and password for the following users." and "Anyone who uses this computer" settings immediately? Sorry, but apart from this test I don't know any solution off-hand. Could have something to do with user rights. Perhaps somebody else can help? Please chime in. Hans-Georg -- No mail, please. |

Hans-Georg I have some notes from MVP Kelly Theriot about limited users not being able to get online. I can't pinpoint the original location on her site (an excellent resource, btw at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm) but here's the info: Registry settings to check from Kelly Theriot for the problem that limited users can't get online. Seems to be connected with malware, but check these entries: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\InternetSettings] ProxyEnable set to 0 ProxyServer verify that the IP:Port is valid [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnet Explorer\ControlPanel] Connection Settings Connwiz Admin Lock Set either both to 0 or delete. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer] NoInternetOpenWith NoWebServices Set either both to 0 or delete. Note: NoPublishingWizard and NoOnlinePrintsWizard could also be listed [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnetManagement] RestrictCommunication Set to 0 or delete Dan, since Kelly mentions that malware could be involved, make sure the computer is 100% spyware and virus-free. Post back if you need help doing that. Malke -- MS-MVP Windows User/Shell Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic" |

Thank you Malke,
I searched for all of those items in my registry, but those that were there were already set to the values which you instructed me to set them to. So I still have the problem. Does anyone else have an idea? - Dan R. "Malke" wrote: Hans-Georg Michna wrote: On Tue, 23 Nov 2004 10:01:04 -0800, Dan R. wrote: Thank you for your suggestion. I tried it, but it did not work. Does anyone else have an idea? What about the malware aspect that Kelly mentions? What have you done to make sure the machine is completely clean? If you need suggestions as to how to scan for malware, let me know. Make sure you do scans with at least Ad-aware and Spybot S&D in all user accounts as they will find user-specific stuff in each account.
