You really need to enable all the security [default] options with XP before connecting to the web to register/activate. Activate would seem to be a misnomer since the OS runs fine without the activation for the 30 days. Myself I found that XP seems to be a virus magnet in it's unsecure setup. Or you can try using trend micros house call, or if you have a virus scanner, use that before connecting to the web, clean things 1st. Activate virus software and firewall's. Or XP's security w/firewall. Then to be safe I'd run a full virus scan once you've cleaned everything, and finished the installation and a reboot. And if you're now clean, attempt the connect to activate. hello all I am having a lot of trouble after upgrading from win 98se to xp. i have recently bought a new pc and put on a genuine win xp os. everything is fine untill i register(cos you only get 30 days) once activate online i get these......within a couple of minutes(just by clicking the big blue E icon. internet optimizer Istsvc media access sidefind sloctchbar Tsa 180 search assistant websearch toolbar wintools easy installer(by websearch) no mater how many times i uninstall them they keep coming back and chewing my connection. i aint no pc whizz so if anyone can tell me how to perminantly get shut of all these please let me know. i have only put on spyware doctor, and each time i boot up i have 300 detections of crap. i have recently removed eveything and reinstalled and activated and the same has happened again. can anyone please help. -- more pix @ http://members.toast.net/cbminfo/index.html |

If you are installing from an older "original" Windows XP CD (without SP2)
do the following. Disconnect your internet connection PHYSICALLY from the computer. Format/install the operating system. Once installed, turn on the internal ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) or install a 3rd party firewall (that you have previously downloaded and saved to CD). Reboot to make certain the firewall is functional. Now, shut down and physically connect your internet connection. Now you're on you way! -- Regards, Richard Urban aka Crusty (-: Old B@stard :-) If you knew as much as you thought you know, You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew! Start over again. Do not repeat do not repeat do not connect your computer during the install process. Choose the "activate later" option. Make absolutely certain that the Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP has been turned on. Open Control Panel - Network Connections, right-click on the icon for your Internet Connection and choose Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and ensure that the Internet Connection Firewall is turned on. You can now connect the computer to the Internet, do the Windows Activation, and download the Windows Updates that you need for your computer. Do not repeat do not start surfing the Internet or receiving any emails unless and until you have a fully functional and up to date antivirus software in place and have also installed some sort of Spyware prevention software such as Spyware Blaster from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html Now that you have installed a clean copy of Windows XP, updated it, and your system is protected with firewall, antivirus, and antispyware it is reasonably safe for you to start visiting web sites, receiving emails, and other online activities. However you must ensure that you keep all of your protective products up to date and functioning. Good luck Ron Martell Duncan B.C.
