Default Cannot get printer to work from laptop on network.

I recently set up a network between my desktop and laptop using hard wire
with RJ45 connector. I can get internet on laptop but can't get printer to
work. In the printer dialog box the icon has "Ready" by it - but I cannot
get documents or anything printed on the printer connected to my desktop. It
seems I am missing something - but what? Help appreciated - thanks. DA.
