How to set default page settings?
Hi,
I am struggling with setting default page settings in Windows XP. I have found three ways to accomplish this: ONE: Choose "Properties" (right-click on the printer) == tab "General" == button "Printing Preferences" == button "Advanced" == dropdown under "Paper/Output - Paper Size". __________________ TWO: Choose "Properties" (right-click on the printer) == tab "Advanced" == button "Printing Defaults" == button "Advanced" == dropdown under "Paper/Output - Paper Size". __________________ THREE: Choose "Properties" (right-click on the printer) == tab "Device Settings" == dropdown under "Form To Tray Assignment - Tractor Feed". __________________ Although you might assume that "Printing Preferences"; "Printing Defaults" and; "Device Settings" points to default settings, it actually (in my situation) does nothing with the default settings. When I start an application like notepad, and look at the page setup (under "File" == "Page Setup"), I can not see any of my default settings as applied in steps one to three. In the print form I still have to click the button "Properties" == button "Advanced" == dropdown under "Paper/Output - Paper Size" to select the correct paper size. Is there any way that the settings as mentioned in step one to three can be propagated to the settings in the Windows applications (such as notepad)? -- «·´`·.(*·.¸(`·.¸ ¸.·´)¸.·*).·´`·» «.............. How to set default page settings?
Dear Alan,
In my case option ONE and TWO is not applied when the app. launches. I have tested this on five XP machines and two win2k3 machines. It is very frustrating for our company, we print about hundred pages a day on this printer. The paper has a specific size, my users have to manually select this paper size before the can print. We have an option in our back-office app. that can print all these pages in batch, but than the wrong paper size is selected. How to set default page settings?
Charlie,
What is the driver and it's version? Have you tried installing a newer version of the driver from the manufacturer's web site? I have seen some older HP drivers save the DEVMODE for a document as "ONE" or "TWO", when it's actually not permanent unless the application decides to save it. This does not explain what you are describing, but it does demonstrate that some drivers do odd things with DEVMODEs. Some applications like Microsoft Word will save a DEVMODE along with the document, but Notepad is not one of them, so I agree that this behaviour is unexpected. How to set default page settings?
Paul,
The driver is for an OKI MICROLINE 320 matrix printer. I just downloaded the latest driver from the manufacturer's website, did not make any difference. I have also tested the DEVMODE on one of our (more updated) laser printers, that works fine indeed! Maybe propagating the DEVMODE it is not supported on this old type of matrix printer (build: 1987) But I have noticed that applications like Ms. Word can save a DEVMODE. When I use the macro recorder in Excel, it looks like this: With ActiveSheet.PageSetup .PaperSize = xlPaperA4 End With So I think we have to use this in our back-office app. as well, if possible......................... -- «·´`·.(*·.¸(`·.¸ ¸.·´)¸.·*).·´`·» «.............. How to set default page settings?
It doesn't matter how old the printer is, it matters how the driver was
written. If you are using a driver built for the correct version of Windows, Windows should be able to maintain the user and machine DEVMODEs no problem. However, the driver may do something odd to override that. With some drivers, they just keep reusing old code and rebuilding it for newer versions of Windows, without regard to proper behaviour or new requirements. It sounds like you are saying some drivers work fine for you, whereas the Oki Microline 320 one does not. Therefore, I would suggest trying a different driver. For example, any of the generic Epson dot matrix drivers that come with Windows such as Epson FX-80. I had one of those when I was a kid Paul charlie brown wrote in message ...
