Default Sherlock Holmes meets the Mother of all Performace Problems

Hi,
Seeking Sherlock or his geeky support person....

I have run windows XP after removing some nasties and the following hassles
seem to occur:
Can no longer: cut and paste; click and drag icons on desktop; it won't
copy; can't file transfer; Int Explorer won't initiate; email (outlook) says
I can't do the requested action (send/recieve); the network card isn;t
recognised; the media files won't play; I can't send to e drive to burn
files.; the security I have - Trend Micro - apears to load and then vanishes
....seems all I can do is read, open some programs and type...

Now, I thought I would try system restore...it gives me the message:
"Syst restore can't save your computer. Re-start and run system restore again"

This I do and the same message appears again....and again....and again.

###Here's what I have tried###
1. Systenm Restore - message "can't save etc as above"
2. System Restore from Advanced Mode at start up: F8/advanced mode/recent
working config/xp pro -- it returns to the same state with the same problems
3. Looked through system restore info on the MS help and support site.
Examined error messages, restore info, nothing jumped out as the same and a
lot of the info ended at diagnostic level..ie: no solutions
4. Follwed some advice to look at event logs for errors ..but I have no
idea what to do.
5.Another suggestion: Under control panel/admin tools/services find system
restore to see that it was running automatically and the status was
"started". Auto was there but not "started"...I looked at properties and
selected "start" and the error message appeared: "Syst Restore could not
start, Error 1075, Dependency service doesn't exist, or is marked for
deletion"
6. Did error fixing scan thru system tools -- nothing changed
7.Ran a program called Registry Mechanic...it found 461 errors and fixed
them...no change

### Here's what I did before the current status ###
(to the best of my memory)

Got bombarded by pop-ups (cell phones, registry cleaner, yada yada yada)
atfer looking at a freeware site
Ran TrendMicro security
Ran CC Cleaner
Ran Spyware Search and destroy
Ran xoftspySE
Ran VundoFix
Ran RegReanimator
Ran Reg Mechanic

I "ran" a marathon. Some progrs would remove stuff and then it would come
back so I would look for the next level of removal from forum advice. THe
items that were considered "dangerous" were an assortment of file types: dll,
exe, ini (?)..

I resigned myself to having to blat the PC and start over but I couldn't
file transfer OR burn files I wish to keep. (work stuff, photos, vids and a
bucket load of memorabilia)..

Any clues?

Thoughts and suggestions welcome...

Regards

Neal

Hi Neal,
Sherlock want the crime scene to investigate and sniff for any clues, as
per-your description you looks like still infected and further helping hand
to eliminate this infection completely to gain control of your system as
before, so try to download the hijackthis and send the log to many forums
wold wide for analysis, for Exmp and Video Tutorials in Au:
http://www.zdnet.com.au/video/0,2000...170074p,00.htm
http://www.merijn.org/index.php
Download the Hijackthis and send the report to one of many
forums for analysis and troubleshooting:
When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. Post
your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7, or other appropriate
forums for expert analysis, not here.
Does your Norton Up and current for updates and subscriptions?.

Basically I'd say your system is "hosed" badly enough that you might as well
bite the bullet and do a complete clean reinstall. That means everything's
gone and you start over.

Unfortunately because your system seemed to have major problems from
pop-ups,, spam etc. etc. I'm willing to bet that's beyond your capabilities.
Betting you can't resist the word "free".

That means you probably should take it to a qualified tech and hopefully
have it done right. Note - even this is a gamble as qualified techs
now-a-days seems to be any young fellow who managed to figure out his own
system with no guarantee he/she knows anything about any other hardware etc.

Default Sherlock Holmes meets the Mother of all Performace Problems

Such insight ....

There might be another option for me.

To try and come up to speed with some info by visiting forums and learning
about what is going on from compassionate people who feel the need share
their knowledge and experience.

Btw...

Have a re-read of my post and your response..try and read between the lines
and get a picture of what is really going on. Not so much the "tech stuff",
more the impact stuff; the way something like this might affect a person,
their family and their livelihood. I'm sure you can make the leap.

Have a look at the words and accusatory tone of your response and try and
understand how insulting, judgemental and unhelpful your "help" is.

I understand your point of view about "trusting" qualified techs and really
sourcing one that can do the job, not say they can and use your pc as their
training ground. That might be true if you viewed the world as unsafe and
"everyones out to get you" and can't be trusted.

Fortunately, I don't.

Clearly you do.

I'm wiling to bet you get a kick out of what I call seagull behaviour: fly
in to a forum, s### on everything with a very negative point of view and fly
out. You most likely will justify it all from your ever so lofty but I'm sure
isolated and lonely vantage point, as supierior knowledge being handed down
to the fools.

Some unsolicited advice:

If you have the courage.....

Take a look in the mirror.

Thanks Nass....

I will follow some of this thru and get other people's perspective on it..

You have been very helpful and I appreciate your enthusiasm for supporting
others in need of help.

You know, you can tell a lot about a person by the way they do things. Your
response was respectful, courteous and chock-full of value.

I bet that's very you!

Cheers

Registry Mechanic is of little or no value. I hope you didn't pay
anything for it! In fact, if I were you, I'd stay away from *all*
registry cleaners.

The truth is virtually everything you require to maintain your system
can be had for free. Here's a list of recommended *free* utilities:
