Default unknown files in WinXP

I am running windows XP with service pack2 on a Pentium machine. I seem
to have picked up a number of directories labeled
12dfe21b4363607
71e9b297da8c1e9db5f1d25
and
772daa7f727870ce9f655d2a030d2ff0

drilling down into these directories gets me to another directory labeled

sp2

drilling down into this sub-directory locates another subdirectory labeled

update

going further a fined a file called "Update.exe"

My question is as follows

What do these files do and can i delete these directories from my system
without causing any damage?

They normally are deleted automatically when the installed is completed. You
can delete it and keep it in the Recycle Bin for a few days in case
something goes wrong.
