You could stop using IE.

If you like IE, you might want to check into
what may have changed on the page. It may
be just what it says: A typo or error in a script
the page is loading.

You can also go into the Advanced tab of Internet
Options and uncheck "Display a notification about
every script error".

Well, I did a system restore and it do knew any good but if I had
known what the problem was I wouldn't have asked :-). I'll see if
doing your recommendation will at least help me understand what's
going on.

Anyway, I thank you for your input.

So it looks like you disabled script debugging which merely hides the
error. The script is still erroring. You're still probably getting the
error icon in the lower left side of the status bar (that you can
double-click to see the status).

You said the error told you to flush the TIF folder but you never said
whether you actually did that. Did you flush your web browser's TIF
(temporary internet files) folder, exit and reload the web browser to
test again? If you configure you web browser to cache page content from
a site, it's possible some old content is no longer in sync with new
content.

You also never mentioned in your starting post (and we have to guess by
your reply) what web browser you are using. So are you using some
version of IE? If so, which one? How did you configure its refresh of
page content (Internet Options - General tab - Browsing history
section, Settings)? I set it to "Check for newer versions of stored
pages - Every time I visit the webpage".

I haven't noticed the icon but of course I didn't know the look for
it.

Yes I did flush the TIF folder (probably six or seven times). What
program would give me those instructions to do so by audio recording?
I generally keep my speakers off but when this was happening I was
wearing a headset otherwise I would not have heard the instructions.
(I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking) The websites in question are coming
from "My Favorites" list. I wasn't having a problem with all of them.

I'm running Windows XP with IE 8 and that hasn't changed since 8 first
came out. In browser history settings mine by default was set on
"automatic" so I changed it to "Check for newer versions of stored
pages - Every time I visit the webpage".

Hell at 76 (77 in December) I'm having to learn a whole new language
much less the technology but I'm having a ball doing it ;-)

I saw that and wondered if you wrote it wrong since a conversion to
sound is not normal operation for most users. That wouldn't be Windows
XP or Internet Explorer feature (that I'm aware of). Maybe you
installed some text-to-voice utility, like Dragon Naturally Speaking or
some screen reader software that coverts text to sound.

I generally keep my speakers off but when this was happening I was
wearing a headset otherwise I would not have heard the instructions.

Aha, so you HAVE installed and ARE using a screen reader. Well, that's
why you get the conversion from text to audio.

In browser history settings mine by default was set on "automatic" so
I changed it to "Check for newer versions of stored pages - Every
time I visit the webpage".

I never liked the automatic setting. It relies on a datestamp for the
web page which may not be accurate. If you ever tried to do a Google
search and include a datestamp (okay for newsgroups search but rather
fruitless for web pages), you'd realize that the web server's datestamp
for a web page can be grossly out of sync with the files used to present
content for that web page. Some designers just have their web pages
updated constantly so it looks like their pages are always new even if
their content is years old.

The automatic setting is to make IE faster to load a page since some of
the content is still local in its TIF cache. It's much faster to get
the files from the local hard disk than to retrieve them from the web
server. But that's a guessing scheme and dependent on the timestamp for
a web page (which isn't correct very often). I've seen content change
on a web page but it still has the old date. Yet that assumes you
configure the web browser to cache those old files for a web site. If
you configure the web browser to flush its cache when it exits or you
use a cleanup utility to do the same, IE doesn't have them for reuse so
"automatic" ends up being the same as "every time I visit" (well, for
the first visit, that is). Automatic is trying to incrementally update
the local cache rather than retrieve everything. Yeah, that's nice
(with some side effects) if you're on dial-up but if you have an always-
on broadband connection (cable or DSL) then there won't be much
difference to you (unless some content is huge, like uncompressed huge
images). Caching won't help at all with streaming media so you won't
save any time on any cache setting when, say, watching an online video.
The streamed content will be sent anew every time you view the video.
Streamed media was designed to start playing immediately without having
to wait for the content to first get cached up and then played.

If you're on dial-up then, yes, Automatic has value but then you should
put a shortcut button to Delete Browsing History in the toolbar since
you often end up having to flush the TIF cache to get a page working
properly again. If you have an always-on broadband connection, I'd
suggest having the web browser get a new copy of the page when you visit
there. Under benchmarking, yeah, "every time I visit" will show slower
performance but then a user isn't flipping between 100 pages as fast as
would a test script.
