It's a wired USB mouse. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

Hmmm. I Googled MS Mouse 1000 and it shows it as a wireless mouse.
Maybe there are two types?

There are.

And did you follow the advice to try an alternate rodent ?

Yes. I had a Logitech wireless mouse that I didn't particularly like
so I uninstalled the MS mouse and installed the Logitech. Still
getting the long hesitation problem when I click on a item.

Your OS is corrupt.

Backup your data, wipe the disk and reinstall XP.

I'd check for an UpperFilter driver, on the mouse device.
Maybe there's a logical explanation for what is going on.

I'm running WinXP-3 and recently I've been having intermit ant
problems with the damn mouse. I left click and nothing. I wait a few
seconds and then it's Ok. I've reinstalled MS Intellimouse software
and it still happens. I've uninstalled the Intellimouse software and
just tried the generic software that comes with Windows and still have
the problem. There are days when it's OK and then it starts up again.
Do I need a new mouse?

I've found if you have more than one mouse software installed this happens

I've uninstalled everything and rebooted, assuming the native mouse
software in Windows would be the active software. The damn thing is
still acting up.
.

Do a ctrl-alt-del to bring up the Task Manager and click on the Processes
tab and reduce the window size so that you can still see it, but doesn't
take up too much of the window. When the mouse acts delayed, look at that
processes box and see if you can spot the process that is suddenly using too
much of the cpu power. It may give you a clue with a problem program.
Sometimes and anti-virus program or an updating process that can't connect
will cause such a problem. I'm sure there are programs that will monitor it
for you , but I don't know which ones (some sort of 'process manager'
program). I know that SuperAntiSpyware Pro would make my pc extremely slow
when it tried to update and couldn't find the server on my Win2000Pro
system, including a 'delay' in typing. It doesn't cause that problem on my
Win7 64bit system.

I just re-installed XP two weeks ago and that's when the trouble with
the mouse started.

Why did you reinstall xp and did you do a clean install or install over the
top.
The answer may help the knowledgeable ones here help you better.
Best of luck,
