Default Sharing & "Entire Network" ??

I have an XP pro system cabled to a wireless router that's cabled to a cable
modem.
I have an XP home system connected to the router via wireless.
The XP home system was just added a couple of weeks ago. At that time I
installed a brand new USB wireless adapter to it.
I ran the Network Setup Wizard on the pro system and then on the home
system, setting up a network named 'HOME'. All (Internet access, printer
sharing, folder sharing) worked just fine until a couple of days ago.
Now - on either system - when I go to My Network Places | Entire Network |
Microsoft Windows Network the system(s) take about 30 seconds to find the
'HOME' network. When I click on that Icon the systems takes about 45second
and then times-out to an error message "HOME is not accessible. You might
not have permission to use this network. . . . "
I still have Internet access, shared printers still work such, shared
folders are usable if I add then using Add Network Places. However, In
addition to the above mentioned 'Entire Network' issue my Shared Documents
folder(s) refuse to be added as Network Places.

Windows firewalls are disabled on both boxes. At the suggestion of another
newsgroup I added identically named user admin accounts to both systems. (I
was told this is "required" - but it was not required back when the above
items were working)

The solution to this is not critical since I do have print sharing and do
have 'regular' folder sharing.

Up until a few days ago I could just click on my "HOME" network Icon and the
entire shared network was visable. Not now!

Any help/suggestions is appreciated.

I would like to know myself since I am having a similar problem.

Please, responses like "I had to reenable the security center" are useless
to us all. If you think you have an answer, please elaborate a bit more
than typing 7 words. Thanks.

Carl - I would like to know myself. Obviously!

I'm gonna keep banging on this one until I solve it. There are WAY too
many, very similar, problems presented for answers in these, and on MANY
other web, newsgroups that are not answered. The issue seems to be quite
prevalent.

This morning I've completely reamed both computers, the workgroup each
belongs to and run the Network Setup Wizard on each. No cure. I tried a
potential cure of adding the IP addresses and computer names, plus the pre
load switch, to a lmhost file. No Cure. If I do a Run "ndtstat / any
switch all the information is listed for the appropriate computer. No
cure.

This network allows me to add network printers and individually added
Network Places. It sees (finds) the network on the Entire Network (though
it takes 30 seconds to do so) and lists it by name - so there is no question
but it's found the network - but when I click on that, named, network the
system takes about 45 seconds to tell me it's unavailable.

Both computers on the network can see individual pieces if I add each
individually. Both computers can find the Entire Network (though very
slowly) but refuses to list the items in total.

This is nuts!!

I've read, this morning, that wired networks, and/or networks that are
client-server networks don't, generally, have these issues. This tells me
that Microsoft XP has glitches (bugs) in the wireless portion of it's code.

Run the network wizard again. Make sure workgroup names
are the same on each comp, try to set up different
network model when running the wizard. Maybe run it again
and pray :-) Setting up a network can be incredibly tough!

OK. Having had this problem in every SP2 install I have done, in which
none of the firewalls were SP2 compatible; toggling the "I'll manage the
firewall" setting in the Security Center, then additionally disabling
the Security Center Service (what good is it if I manage security) and
disabling the Internet Connection Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
Service (I don't share and don't use the firewall), my network could not
be found with the typical "you are not authorized to view the network"
Re-enabling both the Security Center Service and the ICF/ICS Service
magically restored access to the network - although shared printers had
always been available.

In addition to this, again with a firewall not SP2 Compatible, with the
default set of services still running, I had no internet connection on
any of these SP2 installs. I believe that this is caused by SP2 locking
down all ports and protocols with no SP2 compatible firewall, making
internet connnection impossible. Enabling TCP/IP filtering of the
connnection and selecting Permit All for all ports and protocols solved
this problem.

Thanks Jack - I found the cure at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

Computer Browser service was set to manual on both systems but was not
starting/ed. I set them to Automatic and started them.

Instant results!

It is very frustrating. I found Win 98 networked easily, and everytime. I
have so much trouble understanding what's so hard for Microsoft to get this
right!

My home XP network is working just fine, but I'm trying to change over 5 old
'98 computers in my office, which were working fine, to 5 new xp computers
for which, to this point, very little has gone well.

I'm going to check your latest link. Some of your other stuff has been
helpful- thanks.

Oh yeah, I already saw that link posted in this group. I could see that was
a key issue so I printed it out. Now I have to get to my office to try some
of this stuff out! :-)
