Newbie Q - W10 License?
Former Ubuntu user - I want to install W10 on an empty PC I have been given. I will buy a licensed version of a W10 OS. but if I do, is it a one-time buy? Or do I have to renew it annually? Murph |

Murph It's one-time. If it's a full licence you will also be able to transfer it to a new machine in the future. |

I just tried on Mint 18.3 and wine 1.6.2 An older wine but that's Mint. It did nothing, no pop up, no error (visible), and I'm not hunting logs. Al |

I have a sooper-duper config around somewhere. My problem here is "now, what VM did I put that in" :-) That's why I didn't volunteer to test, because right now, I don't know which one I should be using. If I was organized, I'd be dangerous. Or you may come out a coupla hundred bucks ahead by buying a OEM license from your local Frys or Bestbuy. Not transferable, but probably a third of the price. |

Isn't it obvious MS's strategy is to eventuqlly "rent" their software with some cyclical fee. I've often remebered B. Gates when young stated he felt he should be paid for every time someone used his software and not just this buy once use whenever approach we are familiar with. Once it's a "rented" product MS will give it away to anyone anytime anywhere. You'll just have to pay for various levels of use. Least that's what I see the future bringing. Yup. For applications at least; Office is already going that way. I imagine the OS will be "free" from now on as MS have already stated there won't be any new versions/releases of Windows. |

Just about as un-intuitive and unnatural as one could imagine. The open source office software is adequate for users like us too, I think. When Cortana gets to the points where she dictates your letters from the spoken word, then that may be a game changer (and how far off can that be...). |
