Default Is SP1 a prerequisite for SP2?

In other words does SP2 "roll up" all security patches
and other updates from XP's inception or only from SP1?

My grandson's computer has the orignal XP. It was never
hooked up to the internet. He enters 1st grade next week
and he'll pobably need internet access very soon. I
ordered the SP2 CD to avoid downloading hundreds of
megabytes and want to know if I should order the SP1 CD
as well. (Links to ordering an SP1 CD would also be
appreciated if necessary.)

No, SP1 is not a prerequisite, SP2 contains all that is in SP1 and all the
updates since it. Therefore, you'll only need to install SP2 and obviously,
keep the computer updated from there on.

SP2 contains all the updates that were included in SP1, so you do *not* need
to install SP1 before you install SP2.

1st grade, it boggles the mind. SP1 is included in SP2

But, if my PC will not powerdown with SP2 and it did with SP1 (SP2 seems
to fail to recognize that the mobo is ACPI compliant), will it pick up that
feature from SP1 and not have it overwritten by SP2? I'm thinking of trying
it to find out...a lot of work for a simple question.

The fact that SP1 is included in SP2 doesn't mean that there may not
be changes in SP1 files in SP2, just that all the upgrades in SP1 are at
least included or improved in SP2. The OP's question was whether
he needed the SP1 CD to install it before SP2, and you don't need
to do that.

When you get through with installing SP2, there will probably be some
files that are identical with SP1 files and some files that were in SP1 that
are changed in SP2. Possibly not, though, maybe all SP1 files are changed
in SP2. I can give you a definite maybe on that one.

So SP1 and SP2 behaviors for the same stimulus can certainly be different.

I ran the test to see if SP2 slipstreamed into WinXP Pro(with
SP1 slipstreamed) would solve the powerdown problem. It did
not. [This test was to determine if there was anyway to preserve
the ACPI compliant feature of XP/SP1 which SP2 now fails to
recognize].

Sounds like you have it conclusively pinned down. Now to determine
whether the current behavior is considered to be a "feature" rather than
a "bug" by Microsoft. Are you sure that its not some BIOS inconsistency?

I've tried two BIOS with 2 flashes, no difference. When XP SP2 is installed
there are no references to ACPI in device manager, and it doesn't powerdown.
A fix is to hit F5 when setup says hit F6, to select ACPI Multiprocessor; device
manager now shows ACPI in two places. But, it's very tricky after the F5
selection to hit F6 fast enough to get it reconized so I can load raid drivers for
my SATA. But it can be done.

I presented the problem to Gigabyte, and I don't like their answer very much:
"SP2 has certain bugs, please revert back to SP1. If you wish to use SP2 you
will need to contact microsoft regarding this issue since it works with SP1."
Don't 'cha just love 'em? That's exactly what another vendor told me when I
said their program didn't work with SP2, hey said ok, you will have to use
SP1.
