Logoff/Shutdown failure

Forgot to include what happens when I try. Sorry.

Recently re-installed Win XP PRO on my computer to
correct some things. Re-applied SP1a.

Cannot logoff or shutdown computer even when logged on as
Administrator. I don't get any screen messages at all,
but the System event log shows Event ID 1017

?
