Default Code 28 Audio Device malfunction

Hello, I'm having trouble with sound on my PC (running Win XP Home Edition).
I was trying to get the sound device to switch to headphones only, not the
speakers, but now the speakers won't work at all. The device manager gives
an error code of 28, it's as if Windows doesn't recognize an audio device at
all now. In the Control Panel, when I click under Sounds and Audio Devices,
the Properties window comes up and it says "No Audio Device". So basically
there's no sound now, as if there's no audio device at all on the computer.

Can anyone advise? Thanks!

The device is disconnected in some way, perhaps a loose card in a slot.
