Default Error -- The registry cannot load the hive (file)

Hello friends and neighbors,

Can anyone steer me in the right direction to solving this problem? Thanks much in advance.... -- Claude

The following message appears on my laptop (XP) during booting. If it's not a home fix job with the original CD, Norton, etc, is it something a computer repair shop could fix? Or is it better to remove the hard drive and recover the data on another computer?

I tried hitting F8 during start up and got a menu with choices IDE, CD and Intel. IDE and Intel end up giving the same error. Don't have CD handy here.

STOP: c000021S {Registry file failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file);
\SystemRoot\System32\config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate,
It is corrupt, absent or not writable

That's a registry error but it could be cause by faulty RAM

Before you do anything run a RAM test (such as memtest86)

Or a problem on the hard disk not allowing the hive tpo be read.

Or the file system got corrupted due to unclean system shutdown.

Thanks for all the info. I can't get past the start-up screen. Hitting F8 also returns to the start-up screen. How would I run any of these type of tests?

I suggest downloading SystemRescueCd CD image - a linux LiveCD.

http://www.sysresccd.org/Download

The list of significant tools:
http://www.sysresccd.org/System-tools

The list of all tools:
http://www.sysresccd.org/Detailed-packages-list

Use "memtester" for testing the RAM. It may also provide "memtest" at boot
menu.

For the physical harddisk condition... Harddisks have S.M.A.R.T. feature
that can tell you how many errors it encountered and how severe they are.
SystemRescueCd has "ide-smart" and "smartmontools" for this. Watch for
warning indications, since they're pretty accurate. If it's found bad,
backup the disk/partition immediately, then replace the old drive. Do
further check & repair later.

If all is OK, it's indeed a file system corruption. However, repairing the
file system is a risky task and may backfire if you don't have enough
experience. I'd suggest taking it to a computer shop for repairing Windows.
Or if you have a friend who knows how Windows work inside and out, ask him
for help. Depending on the severity of the corruption, it may be repaired
without reinstalling or install-repairing Windows.

Official article for the main problem:

http://www.memtest86.com/

Run memtest first

If it finds *any* errors you can stop your test as at least one RAM
stick is bad.

If it passes, then run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic,
you can get that from their website.

If your hardware checks out ok, you'd then need to boot from your XP cd
and run chkdsk /r from the repair console...

it could fix the problem, but as you were warned elsewhere,
you could end up writing a lot of data to chk files.

Not that likely if your file system is NTFS,
but a real possibility with a fat32 filesystem.
