Wi-Fi no longer auto connecting

I haven't updated to the April 2018 version so am still il on 1709.

Recently the Wi-Fi has stopped auto connecting whenever I switch on the
computer. A asterisk shows on the task bar networking icon and when I click
on it it happily shows my network's ssid and the atomically connect check
box is selected.

This is a desktop with a strong signal and up until a couple of weeks ago
would connect reliably.

Any suggestions to get this working correctly again? I've turned off fast
boot with no change.

Your settings sound correct, try forgetting the SSID and re-adding it?

Good point, I'll try that.

You might also reboot your router. I have seen that solve such problems
as well.

I guess I could, but no other device in the house is having problems (two
tellies, three mac laptops, five iOS devices, an Xbox and a Linux server).
Although, it's notable that it's only the windows 10 pc that's failing to
connect automatically.

Try unchecking the "Connect automatically" box, closing the Settings
windows, then reopen and recheck the box.

Yup. Routers are black magic. Mine forgot just one device out of
eight. After spending a lot of wasted time because it "couldn't
be the router" I rebooted the router...problem solved.

If the router is at fault 'too often', it is sometimes useful to perform
a factory/hard reset of the router, either by the mfr's factory reset
instructions or the 30-30-30 strategy. Naturally after such a hard

With the router plugged in and powered on, hold down the reset
button for 30 seconds.
While still holding down the button, unplug the router from the
power source for another 30 seconds. You can do this by unplugged the
power cable from the wall or by unplugging the power cable from the router
Still with the reset button held down, turn the power back on and
hold for yet another 30 seconds.


Some routers don't need 30 sec or power cycle.

So router rebooted and pc now auto connects. I've only done it once so
we'll see how long that lasts :-/
