I think the faux bold/underline/italics stop at non-alphanumerics, in
thunderbird at least ...

For those of use who read news in plain text it
looks like:

asterisk colon dash right parenthesis asterisk.

Like maybe you were choking as you wrote your
post and then accidentally hit Send just before falling
off your chair. I hope you're OK now.

I do all my reading and writing in plain text, I was just curious as I

I suppose you want it to signify that you're smiling boldly?? What it
actually does is completely dependent on your newsreader or mail agent.
Some of them are "smart" enough to recognize some common emoticons and
substitute a cutesy little picture. The character sequence :-) is a
common one that's been used for decades. The same sequence surrounded
by asterisks means nothing and is rightly ignored.
