Default ISO, Mount

Why do I not get a *mount* option when I right click an .ISO file in
windows 10, 1809 running as Administrator?
What am I doing wrong? Everyone else seems to make it work.

Right NG this time :-)

Did you see my reply in Windows 7 ?

KenW

"eject" to make it not show in File Explorer

KenW

Maybe it is a format Windows does not recognize?

Yes I saw you in Win 7, I usually use a burning program but got curious
on this Mount option Which Paul and someone else has mentioned so
decided to mount a couple and see what was in them, But Alas no mount
Option, just Open, which opened up some kind of Download inspection
thingy which has nothing to do with what I want.

Yes regular ISO9660, linux 19.1 Mint ISO.

No Double left click opens that download inspection thing.

I presume you can mount it in Linux, if not, it may be
corrupted. Yo can always boot from another Live ISO
and test it.

If it is fine in Linux, from Windows:

shutdown /s /f /t 00

jerk to power cord out the back

wait 5 minutes

fire it back up

wait five more minutes after it "looks" booted

try again

now if that works, consider turning off "fast boot". Remember
it won't take until you do a

shutdown /r /f /t 00

You installed a third-party program which took over the association for .iso files.

To fix, see the first few search results he

I wonder why that "Default App" value of "Window Disc Image Burner"
is not being set by default ?

I've never had a problem getting the Mount option to show up. And
I've done Upgrade installs from Win7 as well as regular installs.
I don't generally install stuff like Daemon Tools or virtual CD
mounters of the third-party kind. The reason for swearing
off Virtual CD things, was conflicts between burning programs
and Virtual CDs. In the past, if a Virtual CD was present,
a burning program would go into a loop when "sniffing" such things.
So while I know of some mounters, I don't always have (or need)
the mounting they do. As there are other ways.

While I've seen and tested this one, for some reason I
keep uninstalling it. This was a test done in a VM today.
And that's a good enough method for an Upgrade Install (setup.exe).

Thanks Ralph, Great job, you were right, Some program had changed the
association from "file Explore" to"Internet explorer".
This must have happened a long time ago as .ISO files have always had
the IE icon as long as I can remember.

Or just right-click and choose Open With and select Explorer to override
if you had.

I wonder why that "Default App" value of "Window Disc Image Burner"
is not being set by default ?

By default:
1. In the Windows registry, HKCR\.iso points to HKCR\Windows.IsoFile
[HKCR\.iso] @="Windows.IsoFile"
2. HKCR\Windows.IsoFile has *two* verbs/actions, "Mount" and "Burn disc image"
[HKCR\Windows.IsoFile\shell\mount]
[HKCR\Windows.IsoFile\shell\burn]
3. The default verb/action is "Mount", not "Burn".
[HKCR\Windows.IsoFile\shell] @="mount"
4. Both of these verbs/actions appear in the right-click menu, but "Mount"
is the one which appears in bold because it is the default.
5. The "Burn" verb/action is the one that runs "Window Disc Image Burner",
but this is not the default verb/action.

On the OP's computer, HKCR\.iso has been changed to point to somewhere else.
So "Mount" does not appear in the right-click menu.

When the Google search results say to set the "Default App" to "Window
Disc Image Burner", I presume that might do *both* of these:
(1) Sets HKCR\.iso to point back to HKCR\Windows.IsoFile (the original default),
which will make "Mount" re-appear in the right-click menu.
(2) Sets the default verb/action to be "Mount" (*not* the original default).

I've never had a problem getting the Mount option to show up. And

Do you have classic shell installed, this masks that feature.

No classic shell now, But had it installed when Windows 10 was first
introduced, So I guess it may have set it back then and it's been like
that ever since.

Thanks for the info.

You'll have to be more specific. I have Classic Shell installed and the
Mount option is still available.

I think an earlier poster got it right in that if you install a
different handler for ISO files, then that application naturally takes
over and the Mount option rightfully disappears.
