Moving the Windows-Partition
Hello,
on my Chuwi vi8plus-Tablet I need to move the Windows 10-Partition to MERGE it with the free space. Unfortunately fitting software costs more than the whole Chuwi. Is there a possibility to do it with free software? I need it only once. FA |

These can easily create or reduce, adjacent space to the right of the partition in question. For best results, show us a *picture* of Disk Management, for the disk you want to modify. As some manipulations are going to need the services of a third-party Partition Manager. And those must be tested very carefully. Any time you acquire a brand new Partition Manager, make a backup before you use it. Paul |

Since this is a tablet I am assuming you will have to get some sort of external storage to do the backups. If you have an SD slot that might work if you can get one large enough. Otherwise either a USB external SSD or HDD. Be aware that your tablet might not be able to power up a HDD properly. If so, they make cables that have both a micro USB plug and a micro USB jack 'Y'ed to a USB jack. Plug the micro USB plug into the table, the HDD into the USB jack, and a regular USB charger into the micro USB jack. That way the external charger will be supplying the power for the HDD. I am making the assumption that the free space is on the same hard drive as the Windows partion, and that there is nothing in the free space to be saved. In order to use the 'expand' command mentioned above, you will have to destroy the free space partion and turn it back into unallocated space. Then you can 'expand' the Windows partition to take up the additional space that is now unallocated. |

It shows the Windows-Partition at the end of the disk. So I can not expand it for I have to move it to the beginning of the disk. This is not possible with "Disk Management". I see no reason to ship a tablet with actual free space, so my advice is to leave well enough alone. There was a Android-Partition on the tablet too. I deleted it. Reconstruction- and Boot-Partitions are allright and working. FW |

Any time you acquire a brand new Partition Manager, make a backup before you use it. Backups are okay. But there is no data on the tablet and it is not my only computer (not even my only tablet). So if it will not work for some weeks, I don't care. The tablet came with Android and Windows DualBoot. The Windows-partition is at the end of the disk. I deleted the Android-partition because there was not enough space to install updates for Windows 10. Now I have free space at the beginning of the disk and no space at the end of the disk. I can not expand or merge the Windows-partition and therefore have no space left for Windows-Updates. FW |

You correct this if I got it wrong. +-----+--------------+------------------+-----------------+ | MBR | Unallocated | Windows C: | System Reserved | +-----+--------------+------------------+-----------------+ The Windows Disk Management cannot resize towards the left. The built-in Expand only moves the right-hand edge, further to the right. In other words, the spare space is on the wrong side of the C: partition. You need a third party partition manager for this. Shown here, is Paragon Partition Manager 14 Free. https://s2.postimg.org/ds20vlro9/resize.gif In the preferences, set the alignment to the 1MB option (i.e. Non-legacy). When the tool works, it uses the "preference" to decide how partitions are aligned, and for your modern 1MB disk, you don't want that left on legacy (divisible by 63) setting. As that setting is bad for Flash storage devices. When the program first comes up, it's in Tile mode. Click the appropriate tile (my upper right inset photo), as shown in the picture, to show the "normal" mode. Click the C: partition, select Move/Resize, and extend the C: partition to the left. Once you're happy with the dimensioning, there is an "Apply" button in the upper left hand corner. Most of these tools use the "Apply" concept, to help avoid accidents. If you don't like the command you just set up, you could Quit before hitting Apply, for example. Paragon is a member of the "Ghost" family, when it comes to working approach. In this case, it needs to reboot, and come up in WinPE-like mode, while it does the resize of C: . Don't panic when it reboots the computer, and the screen looks "a bit old-fashioned". Is it going to like whatever you're using for boot manager ? I expect your setup is just a Win10 vanilla boot setup, so I expect this will be OK. If GRUB is running things for some reason, I don't know how this reboot will turn out. It shouldn't take long to do, if you don't select sector-by-sector move. As all it needs to do is change the origin, move the file system header sector, and resize the outside envelope. It really should not need to move data, so there should be no lengthy moving step. The reboot steps are likely to take more time than any other step. ******* http://download.cnet.com/Paragon-Par...-10904411.html There should not be any adware in that one, as Paragon is paying for the download. The one I got was: pm14free_x64_eng.exe 53,091,632 bytes If you're using Windows 10 32-bit version, you're going to need to find the 32-bit version on the same site. Google for cnet paragon partition manager 14 free HTH, Paul |
