Without iTunes, you use a third-party application. ******* https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3371288?start=0 "Step 4 of http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 checks if the Apple Mobile Device USB driver is installed. This is essential and a common source of problems. In at least some cases, Windows will install the 'MTP USB' driver. Indeed, Windows will reinstall this driver if you uninstall it. The MTP USB driver is essentially a Windows bug (possibly caused --- idiot by Microsoft). You MUST replace the MTP USB driver with the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. Step 4 explains how to do this. Note that you MUST use the 'Have Disk' approach. Otherwise, Windows will just reinstall the invalid MTP driver. The Apple doc indicates that you can find the correct driver at C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\ Mobile Device Support\Drivers. Perhaps this is correct on some systems. You may find the correct driver in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. " That is a hint, but also a poor analysis. MTP is a basic protocol. It has DRM capabilities (as compared to the original fully functional USB Mass Storage mechanism). It's up to any device manufacturer to make sure their hardware works with *basic* drivers. In this case, the mis-behavior is an Apple problem, not a Microsoft problem. Apple insists on a proprietary driver to handle the "quirks" they inserted in the device on purpose ? It's their problem. Plenty of devices work without proprietary drivers, over MTP. As long as the Microsoft driver is present, the device can show up. If the "Do Not Copy" bit is set on some content on the mobile device, you may find you are not allowed to copy the content. The content provider, determines the setting. The hardware manufacturers, simply honor the bit setting, whatever the DRM mechanism provides. Microsoft provides a set of "USB.org Class" drivers. In other words, there are a number of fine, standardized USB protocols. Microsoft "owns" its drivers and prevents hardware manufacturers from shipping their own Windows drivers for the purpose. This also means that Microsoft owns the existing quirks, whatever they are. If an Etron chip isn't quite compatible with USB3, in order for Microsoft to take away the right of Etron to ship a driver for that, Microsoft makes sure the Etron quirks list is handled properly in the driver. So basically the idea is, if you're a hardware manufacturer, it's up to you to "admit your sins" to Microsoft, so that everybody wins. If you want your hardware to work with a foreign OS, make sure you do your part to make it happen, for a flawless customer experience. Does Apple give a **** ??? Do I even have to address that ? ******* Even though you don't have iTunes installed, you can still download the installer file, use a copy of 7ZIP and find the MSI with the Apple support driver in it. https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ iTunesSetup.exe 108,771,096 bytes Open the file using 7ZIP (7-zip.org). You'll see the following (right now). AppleApplicationSupport.msi 34,521,088 AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi 10,858,496 --- AppleSoftwareupdate.msi 2,379,776 Bonjour.msi 2,358,784 iTunes.msi 67,940,352 SetupAdmin.exe 77,080 You could *try* extracting just the one I've marked with an arrow, and install that, then connect your Apple device via USB. However, in previous testing, I've noticed clever "dependencies" inserted, to prevent cannibalization of the software and the usage of just one MSI from the set. Each time a new version of iTunes comes out, you'll need to do your own testing, to see what will work and what won't work. It's considered a win, if you don't have to install the iTunes MSI file. If you take AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi over into Linux WINE, you can run the installer and see the basic, properly named, file set. Or maybe use the tool Mayayana wrote, to see what's in there. At some level, you should be able to "carve out" just the driver portion. But I'm not going to spoil the surprise by doing the work for you. To be honest with you, I'm even sick of the word "iTunes", because of the amount of time I've wasted already over the years, tearing that mother apart. I would sooner just take a large rock and "smash" standards-noncompliant hardware and "lock-box behavior". because it's a waste of time. This is also the reason I cannot be "100% behind" Windows 10. Because it's a consumer-antagonistic OS. But since I have plenty of OS options here, I don't have to get worked into a lather about it. I have options. I can afford to treat Windows 10 as "just a bad experiment". Have fun, Paul |

Have Apple relaxed the restrictions on reading/writing/launching files on USB (or rather Lightning) sticks? Genuine question ... I have no knowledge of Appleās policy with regard to Lightning Flash sticks such as the iXpand. However, with the help of the iXpand app, my experience has proven to be issue free. For my last extended travels in December-January, I had 12 movies converted to m4v using Handbrake, loaded onto my 128GB iXpand, along with some music. I was able to view those from within the iXpand app without issue.I could have transfered those files to my iOS devices (I did for 1 m4v) but there was no perceptible impact on playback performance, so I saved the space. I was also able to backup all photos shot with my iPhone to theiXpand. -- Regards, Savageduck |

can I one time transfer about 12gb of 4gb video avi & mkv files from windows to the ipad over usb lightning cable without itunes? how? Not worth the trouble in my experience. I've installed iTunes on many different versions of Windows on many different PCs through the years since the 2000s, and haven't ever had the so-called "rampant" problems with it professed by scaremongering Apple haters. Even on systems where I'd rather not have iTunes permanently installed, it's always been a simple matter to install iTunes, use it for whatever I need, then remove iTunes when I am done. I suspect many within the vocal minority of people who do report problems with iTunes are either experiencing PEBKAC or errors due to other conflicting/malfunctioning software. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter.
