Default How do I Kill/murder with prejudice windows defender antivirus andprevent it coming back?

I have a few hundred gigabytes of stuff that I've downloaded over the years.
Problem is that each update of antivirus software becomes more particular.
Seems that almost anything that can write to memory is now considered
malware.
VNC gets quarantined. A VB6 program I wrote that reads files and
displays contents
is now malware. Diagnostic software is malware...

I can typically work around an individual program that I want to run.
Problem is that stuff gets blocked/deleted/quarantined by background
scans that have zero to do with stopping an actual threat. I don't
even know it's gone until I want to use it.

I WANT IT STOPPED!!

I use Comodo antivirus. I can tell it not to scan certain directories.
If I want to move files or execute something, I can disable it temporarily.
Today, I'm finding lots of holes in the contents, and a smoking gun
that windows defender has secretly deleted/blocked/quarantined a bunch of
stuff.
I don't want to generally allow everything to run. I just want to stop
microsoft from messing with stuff that's just sitting there on the disk
minding it's own business. Would be nice if I could copy/move files
around without antivirus having a hissy fit and blocking it.

I've disabled windows defender antivirus with gpedit.
Does that kill everything? Will it come
back at the next update?
Anything else I should disable?

If you're running another AV, then Defender should not start back up on its
own. I run ZA on my PC, and the only time I see a red 'x' on the defender
icon is when I first boot up and ZA hasn't started up completely yet. Even
then, Defender hasn't fired up; it's just a notice from the Security Center.

ZA is also very picky (strict). I've had it target a few of the NirSoft
utilities and a couple of other things that weren't really viruses, but I
can tell it to ignore them and all is well :-)

Easiest way? Go to

https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10/update

and run ShutUp10.

The section the third from the bottom is "Windows Defender and Microsoft
Spynet." The last item in that section is "Windows Defender Disabled."

Tick that option "on." Reboot. Done.

The more complicated option, and only if you're using Pro or better, is
to do it from gpedit.msc.

There it's under "Computer Configuration," "Administrative Templates,"
"Windows Components," "Windows Defender Antivirus."

The option in that folder is "Turn off Windows Defender Antivirus."
Change this from "Not Configured" to "Enabled." Gone. Done.

If you have Home:

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html

Has the registry value, or regedit files to download that will set the
key that gpedit modifies.

You can shut down Cortana with a reg key too.

Enjoy.

You might try disabling the Windows service WinDefend.

WinKey+X, then A, then services.msc. Right click on the service.

I'm pretty sure you can tell Defender the same.
You certainly can on Windows 7. I do it all the time and then report the
false positive to Microsoft for analysis. They did one for me last
night, even though it's Christmas! No false positive this morning.

Apologies, don't see the original post.

On the Windows Defender settings tab you can :
• Exclude files & locations
• Exclude file types
• Exclude processes
