Default How to boot Windows 10 into VGA resolution (failed monitor, temporary replacement reports signal out of range)

The monitor on my wife's desktop PC has stopped working - looks as if the
backlight has failed.

Unfortunately the PC is set to a higher resolution (1920x1200) than my own
monitor will support (1920x1080) so connecting that as a spare monitor
results in "signal out of range" errors on my monitor's on-screen display.

How do I start Windows 10 in 640x480 or 800x600 resolution so I can see the
screen so I can set the resolution to one which is low enough for my monitor
(or a spare television) to display?

Googling for "start windows 10 in vga mode" makes the naive assumption that
you can already see the output of the PC and can then access the relevant
Control Panel applet to change the resolution.

Settings Display Resolution

This would work IF his screen worked. I was going to suggest this but
realized he said he does not have a working monitor on that computer.

Maybe from the CPU set up screen? Turn the computer on and off several
time in quick succession should give the the basic set up screen for the
CPU. I believe you can change the resolution somewhere on that screen

Right-Click on the desktop then choose Display Settings. This will
launch the Settings Display

Alternative is to attach another monitor via HDMI (if available) and use
dual monitor settings to correct the display. I can't believe that the
screen is not functional because of wrong settings!! Never seen this
before. Windows is pretty smart about this.

I guess you missed the part where he cannot see the display!
