Can't turn off Synaptic Touch Pad on Laptop. Using usb mouse.
I have a Sony Vaio laptop SVE15124CXS model and it came with windows 8.1
and upgraded to 10 during that freebe upgrade. We got it in 2013, it just keeps plugging along. We have no system disks, by the time I tried to make the 8.1 recovery discs, the whole recovery software via VAIO center would not work. But with windows 10 digital license I gave up. Everything worked fine, and now after years I decided to put in a 256G 2.5" SSD. That works fine too and windows loaded and activated fine. I downloaded the 1809Oct update 64bit. One of my biggest issues is the synaptic touchpad has no provisions in device manager to disable the mouse. Even disable when USB Mouse is plugged in. I've deleted the driver and rebooted and there is still as synaptic mouse, and updating just puts in a better (the old one). Still no joy. Any ideas? |

The Windows 8.1 user manual indicates holding down the fn (function key) and hit the F1 key to turn on/off the touch pad. Give it a try and see if the keystroke feature is still working for you. I have an old laptop that came with Vista and my models keystroke method still works on that machine even after upgrading to Windows 8, Windows 10, and even after a fresh install of Windows 10. |

Have you changed any of the parameters in the Windows Settings. It you go to Setting, Devices, Mouse, Additional Mouse Settings, Device Settings There is an option to turn off the internal pointing device when an external device is attached. I have not checked it as I use both touch pad and mouse depending on what I am doing, but you may try checking it. You can access the same screen from the Touchpad option. -- 2018: The year we learn to play the great game of Euchre |

Got the obvious places in settings that let you turn off if an external mouse is connected, or just flat out disable driver checkbox, but to no avail. Even found a registry hack to disable the touchpad but to no avail either, and I'm going to go back this morning and reset that just in case it's doing something wrong. |

The whole idea was to get some speed out of this laptop as it's only an i3 intel processor. 2.4ghz but only i3. I had this spare 250g ssd and a fresh install seemed so simple. Yeh right! I'm now at the logic of just dropping the old one back, and get a larger SSD and just do an clone to the new SSD. It won't clean out the garbage but it will carry over the good garbage ie the mouse. SSDs are cheap and I'm spending too much time. |

But I've found drivers for it from Sony but that's still not a fix. I even found an update for the motherboard chipset and that didn't change anything. We moved 2 years ago, and I swear I had a box marked VAIO or the original box it came in. Either way, we have no literature or anything from the sale. And no CD's came with it. It was an open box. I also waited too long to try the Sony recovery cd software and it failed to work. So basically it's a perfect storm. Any one thing could put me in a better position. But hell it was only a $299 laptop and it's lasted 6 years and a $75 SSD might give it a few more years. |

There is another simple solution, and that is just replace your 6 year old computer. You probably spent over $100 for the new disk, and are talking of buying another one. So far you have at least $100 and probably $200 and many hours of research for a solution, plus several many hours installing and reinstalling the OS and programs. What have you got? A 6 year old patched up computer that has a weak part or bad ram that will shortly fail. Every computer that I have ever owned, died. With each, I tried every thing I could think of to fix the problems I was having. With one computer, I was reinstalling the OS and programs every few months, when that no longer worked. With the last, I was run ChkDsk, when I heard an audible "POP". If you go into any big box store, or office supply store you can buy a new computer that will have a faster processor (more cores, newer technology), a 1TB disk and 8GB of ram for less that $500. To me it seem the choice from and the point of economics is obvious. -- 2018: The year we learn to play the great game of Euchre |
