But that's because it's a _decimal_ system, _not_ because the
quantities themselves are useful. In fact, in real life they're
damn inconvenient, because they don't relate well to sizes and
quantities we humans actually use.

Probably that's why the system is based on metres, kg and seconds,
which we can all relate to on a human scale.

Tsk, tsk, after the trouble I took to allude to all the ways we
_actually_ measure things. I guess you need explicit examples. here's one:

I would have thought that after confusing yourself already with
'ton' you would have given up this debate; however you must realise
that the drink/volume examples you gave rely on units traceable back
to national standards in the mks system.

I stand by my claim. Except for the geeks among us, people
just don't measure their drinks in ml. They measure them by
the can, the bottle, the glass. Much more convenient.

Only if you know for sure which glass you'll get. I'm
writing from Germany and here, even if we only talk about
beer, you can get 0.3 l, 0.4 l, 0,5 l and in some places
even 1.0 l.

OK, one more OT post. :-)

The 0.3l used to be 0.333..., a Seidel, common in Austria
and Bavaria. The other sizes also have names. Whatever,
listen to what people ask for. They may ask for a Schoppen,
the old pint, so I would expect either 0.4l or 0.5l
according to local custom. I don't think they ask for
"Vierhundert Milliliter" or "Null komma vier Liter".

Right and wrong, at least in the city I'm writing from.
Right: nobody asks for "Vierhundert Milliliter" or "Null
komma vier Liter".
Wrong: nobody knows a Seidel here. Austrian and Bavarian
tourists will know it, but local waiters won't. Here
Schoppen is - rarely - used for wine, never for beer, and
means 0.1 l or 0.2 l of wine. And people ask here for a
"Grosses (Bier)" (a big beer) (0.4 l or 0.5 l) or a "Kleines
(Bier)" (a small beer) (0.2 l, 0.25 l or 0.3 l, maybe even
0.33 l, depending on where you are). Most common here is
either 0.2/0.4 l or 0.3/0.5 l. And you'll usually get the
big glass if you don't state clearly that you want a small one.
But then, each city and region has its own custom.
I can only repeat my piece of advice for drinking beer in
German beerhouses and restaurants: make sure you know how
much beer you'll get _before_ ordering a glass. In Munich
(Oktoberfest) it'll be a Mass, i. e. 1.0 l or almost 2
British pints.

During Oktoberfest, it's amazing to watch the women bring beer out to the
tables. I use two hands to drink from one glass of that size, while they
carry 3-4 glasses in each hand. Much respect.

units I've never seen before, Tonne for example, do you know this unit?

Hope you can help me.

Thanks,
