I often do similar with email. I copy code or
text from a richedit window and it pastes as
double-spaced RTF text in OE. So I have to
paste to Notepad first. The same happens with
HTML, as you described. I'm composing in plain
text but it picks up the formattting.

I use Notepad.

As do I.

Right-click Paste Special Unformatted Text.

I was trying to get to an appointment on time, and
it took too much time as it was, to get this done.
No time for reading manuals or Googling.

It's always the "easy" jobs that take half an hour.

It was nothing special, it is the same in MS Word. Been a while since I
used WordPerfect but I am assuming it is the same there too.

Ah, I see. You're trying to compensate for Microsoft's silly defaults (and
by extension also libreoffice) by using notepad as a filter. I'm more
interested in using the clipboard manger as an aide memoire.

An aide memoire? I guess I use files for that. Stripping
formatting is just one thing I use Notepad for.

Today I used it to save the text of a webpage, then
used it to write a sort of essay. I often use it to write
emails if they're long. And I use a TXT file to store a
youtube URL, so that when I come across an embedded
youtube video I can change it to
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=

Any kind of editing like that. It's very rare that I'd be
copying something that I don't edit before I'm through.
I suppose if I bought Clipmate I could copy the time
and then check an hour later to see what time it was
an hour ago.....

This is about as excited as I can get about the clipboard.

I get the feeling that the clipmate fans are people
who like to work on numerous things simultaneously.
As a linear, chaos-averse thinker I can't picture
doing that. I'd get confused.

Your link is interesting, though. I wasn't aware that
so many custom clipboard formats are in use.
In general usage there are only a handful, and for
practical purposes it's basically text or bitmap. But
Microsoft's docs include drag/drop files as clipboard
data, as well as OLE object pointers, even though if
I drop a file into Notepad I don't see it show up as
accessible data in InsideClipboard. So I don't see
why MS are calling that clipboard data.

They even define CF_HTML:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...ipboard-format

Interestingly, that's not listed in the API docs.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...pboard-formats

It's listed as a specific function of IE4/MSHTML.
The document object model of the browser allows for
returning visible text or full HTML and Microsoft are
deciding to call it a different clipboard format when
they send HTML to the clipboard, even though it's
still text and there's no access for the person copying
the text to choose which one they paste. Similarly,
when I copy from a RichEdit window there's access
to either the text or the RTFtext. But Microsoft is not
giving me a choice. Rather, any target aware of
their custom RTFText code can ask for it.
And according to InsideClipboard, a pasting target
can also ask for the RTFtext with or without
embedded/linked objects. And as with HTML,
Windows actually corrupts the encoding in the transfer.
(Write some HTML using the bold tag, open it in IE
and then use the DOM to pull out the HTML and you're
likely to find B converted to STRONG! Similarly, when
I copied a snippet from my own RichEdit window,
Windows cooked up it's own version of the file header
and included that as part of the copied text. The header
even includes "{\*\generator Msftedit 5.41.15.1515;}",
indicating that the RichEdit library created it. But it
didn't. I wrote the header myself and the RichEdit
corrupted it in the transfer to the clipboard.)

Firefox is getting even more involved with exploiting
the clipboard to store its own data. When I copy some
text I get 7 clipboard items, 5 of them custom! They
include the text, the text as unicode, the HTML involved,
and the URL, all in different combinations. Yet there's
no context menu option to "Copy HTML", "Copy Text",
"Copy Location". There's only "Copy".

So it's possible to define a clipboard format, though
that's still only byte data or text. Someone can
define something custom but it's only relevant if the
data will be pasted into something that expects that
format and knows what to do with it. So with the
Firefox example above, it can store the URL of copied
text as a special, custom type of data, but it's still
just text. The custom option just provides a way to
store multiple text strings. Similarly, I can copy
a PPT started in Libre Office, but there's no such thing
as a PPT clipboard format. LO just copies any DIBs
(bitmaps without the file header), along with whatever
text, XML, byte streams, etc it needs to recreate the
file.

That brings up an interesting security issue: Any
process could monitor the URL you visit in Firefox
if you copy anything from a webpage. Another process
only needs to know the numeric code of that data
to retrieve it from the clipboard by, say, checking the
clipboard periodically. That's what InsideClipboard is
doing. Yet there's no reason I can think of for Firefox
to copy that data to the clipboard in the first place.
