There's probably nothing Windows 8 can't do that older systems could
do, provided you're prepared to re-learn how to use a computer to work
out how to do it.

I disagree. Although it depends on what you do. If you only have new
software and no old software, you would probably be better off with 7 or
8. But if you also have older software, the newer Windows versions just
doesn't cut it.

However, its default way of doing things is very counterintuitive to
those who are accustomed to things that most previous operating
systems all had, most Linux distros included. Those would include
visible buttons to click, rather than just knowing that you had to
swipe the mouse off a particular edge or corner with nothing to
indicate that you're supposed to do this.

It was about 10 seconds of counter intuitive for me. I learned a lot in
that first 10 seconds too. :-)

I don't think I'm too old to learn new stuff, but why should I have
to, just to do what I could do before? Computers are supposed to serve
our needs, not the other way around.

It isn't that hard at all and the more you use it, the more it makes a
lot of sense. Doing it otherwise would have been more counterproductive.

Even Vista did better.

Of course, this is in line with MS' good/bad, good/bad Windows roll
out.

Win 98 good
Win Me bad
XP good
Vista bad
7 good
8 bad

9? If it becomes a rental in the cloud, so much for Windows; that's the
end.

There's nothing wrong with windows 8. Here's the thing i bet it is only
old people who are complaining about win8.

IE those who where around in the time of win 95.

And those old people are on the way out, so windows does not care about
the old only the young? As they are the ones who are going to be using
it.

And they are the ones who have growen up with mobile phones.

No one like change!

Querstion how old are you?

Another question what can win7 do that win8 can not please provide a
list. of say ten points or more if you wish.

I'm enjoying my last year before I proceed into my 40s... So maybe I'm
getting "old" - but NOT as old as some of these chronic geriatrics...

My problem with Windows8x is the GUI vis-à-vis the XP interface...

A major problem with Windows 8.1 metro screen is that you have so many
threads going out upon startup BEFORE you even get to your desktop, and you
really have to suss out the system to figure out what's calling who, when,
and for what reason... The other thing is its attempts at automation -
like system cleanups, updates and defrag -- these interfaces are clunky at
best with not nearly as many options as with XP...

Then there's the logic and malleability of the XP Start and Programs
menus... of Windows Explorer... of Control Panel organization...

These are all things that worked fine in the XP recipe - and while perhaps
could have endured some tweaking, did NOT need to be replaced with the
current jumble of disconnected "logic"...

Now, you MAY be one of those folks who when your computer gets slow, or all
loaded up with bloated usage files, takes your equipment to the tech shop
for a cleaning and maintenance session - or perhaps your mommy and/or daddy
just buy you a new one; but, Windows XP let us exercise some control over
these machines with an organized and logical approach - an approach which
could easily be modified from person to person and preference to
preference...

My Windows 8.1 is unaltered by 3rd party hacks thus far... because I've
been trying to identify the logic which the programmers used to set up the
GUI, but alas, there seems to be none except an effort to keep up with the
Google store and emulate Apple....

I hate the way it automatically connects to Bing weather, the Windows
store, MSN news and all those other charming little charms before you can
even get to the desktop - WTF? Wouldn't "logic" present the desktop first,
from whence you'd select what you want/need to do next???

What's the point of having all these slippy-slidey little toolbars to get
to your workspace on a desktop? It's just razzle-dazzle with no apparent
function...

Windows 8x needs a patch (NOT a 3rd-party hack) which will send its
usability back in the direction of XP while keeping any bone-fide
"improvements" in operation, speed and security.

My 2¢

Lots of things are better under 8 compared to 7. The Task Manager, file

Sleep, faster booting, etc. are all better.

That'd open the flood-gates.
Just imagine if you took Windows out of the market. What would happen?

My answer; You'd get lots and lots of people taking up the Win skeleton
and tailoring it.

MS would sue and win. Not gonna happen.

The market would become overflowing with competing
versions of it; a bit like we have with gas and electricity suppliers,
who scramble their tariffs in order to befuddle the punters, tell
outright lies and rule; until eventually the gov would have to step in
and bring them to order.

At least MS were right about tablets. They're the future, no doubt about
it.

Not true. They are a fad an low Ipad sales prove it.

But desktops are still the norm for older people and especially
office work; and those number millions.

Agreed.

If MS can split Win into two; one for PCs, one for tablets, then they'll
get back on track.

Ed

They will rent Windows in the cloud. Don't pay the rent, you can't get
in. They will claim security, access from any device, yada, yada, yada.
Windows is history. I'm glad I know how to use Linux.

That is only happens if you logon to your Microsoft account. Otherwise
all of that is dead. And by the way, welcome to cloud computing if you do.

The other thing is its attempts at automation - like system cleanups,

You still can disable them, no big deal.

Ah, but if they didn't change it, why move on from XP if it was just
like XP?

Now, you MAY be one of those folks who when your computer gets slow, or all

I only had to reinstall Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 machines to get them
stable once again. Bad drivers could really screw them up. Although with
NT OS, I never had to do that.

My Windows 8.1 is unaltered by 3rd party hacks thus far... because I've
been trying to identify the logic which the programmers used to set up the
GUI, but alas, there seems to be none except an effort to keep up with the
Google store and emulate Apple....

I see a lot of logic why Microsoft does what they do. And it all makes
sense to me. But I use many different OS too. If I only used Windows all
of my life, I would probably feel differently.

I hate the way it automatically connects to Bing weather, the Windows
store, MSN news and all those other charming little charms before you can
even get to the desktop - WTF? Wouldn't "logic" present the desktop first,
from whence you'd select what you want/need to do next???

I don't think it logons to Bing Weather if you are not signed in under
your Microsoft account. And the desktop? Just click on the desktop tile,
no big deal or hit the Windows key.

What's the point of having all these slippy-slidey little toolbars to get
to your workspace on a desktop? It's just razzle-dazzle with no apparent
function...

You want them to hang out there and to take up desktop space? I don't.

Windows 8x needs a patch (NOT a 3rd-party hack) which will send its
usability back in the direction of XP while keeping any bone-fide
"improvements" in operation, speed and security.

No, XP style is dead. That is the past and today is the present. No need
to move backwards instead of forward.

Faster booting before the 8.1 update. I used to be able to push the
power button and be typing in the Google Chrome search bar in 45 seconds
(same as my Windows 7 machine with a hybrid HDD) now it takes anywhere
from 1:30 to 1:45+ depending on the weather. Reboots are 3 minutes plus!

Just off of the top of my head here are a few reasons I like Windows 7
better than Windows 8.1.

Boot and reboot time
Don't need a 3rd party start button/menu (no biggie really), but still
No media center (home edition)
Can't play DVDs with WMP
Can't boot into safe mode when starting the computer (F8)
No Windows update bubble
Since upgrade to Windows 8.1 it is slow to recognize some plug and play
devices (if it even recognizes them at all)

Wow, really? Why? I just checked mine and 20 seconds to shutdown and 10
seconds to boot. And this one has all of the updates.

Just off of the top of my head here are a few reasons I like Windows 7
better than Windows 8.1.

Boot and reboot time

I don't know why yours is that way.

Don't need a 3rd party start button/menu (no biggie really), but still

I don't need or use 3rd party Start either. I can use Windows 8 just
fine without them.

No media center (home edition)

I have the Media Center. I bought Windows 8 for this machine for $39.95
and Microsoft offered the Media Center for free back in Jan 2013.

Can't play DVDs with WMP

I can.

Can't boot into safe mode when starting the computer (F8)

You can't? Been using Windows 8 since March 2012 and I never had the
need yet.

No Windows update bubble

I get notifications when there are new updates.

Since upgrade to Windows 8.1 it is slow to recognize some plug and play
devices (if it even recognizes them at all)

Wow! I haven't seen this either.

It's happened already. Look at Linux distros. Nobody knows which one

Best to stick with Windows or Macs knowing that somebody is in charge of

Bull****. I have several web sites and the trackers used to put Linux at
less than one percent. Now it's 10 percent and climbing. If you want a
distro any Windows user can use, check out Netrunner. It has a start
menu and everything and it rocks.

Safer? LOL! Linux doesn't do malware. Windows does and it does it very well.
