I suppose you'll redefine powerful now, just as you did with portable, but
for the standard definition of powerful your statement above is rubbish.
Some desktops are more powerful than some laptops. The reverse is also true.
I'm betting you knew that.

And another
no-brainer is that laptops and smaller computers are meant to run
off of batteries.

By "meant to", I assume you meant "capable of", not that I expect you to
know the difference.

You're really not very good with words.

To be clear, you're talking about the number "nine", which is "Neun" in
German. "nein" is "no" in German.

Exactly what I said. Say "nine" in English and it sounds very much
like the German word for "no".

I think Microsoft Windows is known as Windows in every country, so
plenty of people would hear it spoken of as "Windows Nine", which to a
German would sound like "Windows No", which is hardly encouraging.

Wouldn't a German hear "Vindows Nein"?

That's what they'd hear with their ears. What they'd hear with their
brains, initially at least, might be slightly different.

Maybe it's acknowledgment of a "subscription future". I would
not accept a naive rationale for why it is "10". There is
some evil in that choice, which we'll have to wait and see.
This was not a "9 stinks as a number" decision. It has
some other meaning.

Maybe the next version is called "Windows 10" to avoid confusion with
Windows 95 and 98.

Maybe the intention is to name it after the decade in which it was
created, so in 2020 or shortly thereafter, the next version will be
called "Windows 20", meaning "Windows for the 20s".

You saw it here first.

Just a thought on my part, but with the increasing size and power of

MS is really pushing the Surface. It has been used on Hawaii Five-0
for the past 3 seasons. It's being used on another TV that I watch but

There's chances yet!

I worked with about 600 people, each had at least one desktop and a
laptop. The maintenance people had lots to repair every day. A very
common problem was people spilling drinks on their laptop or desktop
keyboard.

Leaving aside tablets, which are very different from desktops or
laptops, if laptops outsell desktops, I think it's crazy. As far
as I'm concerned, almost the only situation when a laptop should
be used instead of a desktop is when traveling, because it's
smaller and lighter, and therefore easier to carry. In all other
respects, a laptop is inferior to a desktop:

Besides screen size... The fundamental difference is power. If
you're going to use a computer for portability, you don't have the
power of a desktop.

What do you mean by "power"? Computing power? If so that's not true.

Agreed. Considering what most people do with their "devices", 90% or
more of available power isn't used. Texting is using a 747 to deliver a
postcard. Mailing a photo is using a 747 to deliver a pizza.

I think that for what most people use computers/devices for, you
probably don't need anything more "powerful" than Window for Workgroups
era equipment and software. And if those machines comprised most of the
user base, we wouldn't have web pages that track you, filled with a
bunch of mostly useless eye candy and features that don't really enhance
much, IMO..

The main issue is speed, and in actual use I have noticed no difference
between smartphones and desktops. The bottleneck is the human user, and
I don't see much speedup there. On the contrary, I see slowdown, because
we are not as good at multitasking as we _feel_ we are. That's why
Google Glass hasn't caught on. That's why even talking on a handsfree
cellphone is as bad as drunk driving, while texting is many times worse.
We are wired to give 100% of our attention to certain tasks, and those
happen to be the tasks which we use our devices for. Guess why. ;-)

Agreed on the human user being the bottleneck for most of the speed
issue, but I think size of the device and method of input also play into
this.

Is there anyone here that can type as fast or faster on a
tablet/smartphone screen as they can on a keyboard? I suspect not.

Users today don't seem to be interested in learning what
powers/capabilities are in software. Take a word processor, for
instance. How many people bother to learn how to use the styles and
formatting features, or use a template which would include creating
their own templates? Too many just sit on the Tab key and Space Bar as
if they were using a typewriter.

What about automating repetitive processes? Remember when W4WG came
with a macro recorder? Before I switched to Windows, I used a macro
recorder at the desktop level for a number of repetitive operations,
usually to open a document in a word processor. This was before that
ability was built into the OS/software. This Mac still has a built in
macro program, but far more sophisticated than what came with W4WG. But
that's to be expected.

As for multitasking, a friend has read about some studies that seem to
show that people who do practice multitasking are less productive than
those that do not. I suspect the time is lost switching between the tasks.

If you need power for graphics, video, CGI, that's a niche market if
there ever was one. Gaming? Gaming laptops are more powerful than any
desktop was two or three years ago. "Serious" gamers drove hardware
development in the past, but what with dedicated game devices covering
80% or more of the games market, they are no longer a major factor.

I'm not a gamer, never have been. But are the gaming devices as
powerful as desktops are in this day and age?

Most desktops are merely smart workstations. You don't need much power
for that, in fact you don't even need a desktop. That's why laptops are
being sold as PCs (read the flyers before dumping them in the trash some
time ;-)), while tablets and smartphones are converging into the

superphone.

And if everyone jumps on the cloud application bandwagon, the desktop
will be come dumb terminals for a practical sense. Lose that cloud
connection, for whatever reason, and everything you "own" is gone to one
extent or another.

Besides, wireless makes any device into a desktop. Just connect....

Have a good day,

That's true for me. I am far more productive doing one thing at a
time. Even trivial distractions slow me down. Just now the couple
chatting in the next room is slowing me typing this message because I
keep have to stop so I can hear what they are saying.

Haven't the inhabitants of the town in this story been isolated by the
aforementioned dome from the outside world since before Windows 8 and
its derivatives on tablets were released? I seem to recall the
characters in the first season communicating with outsiders by writing
messages on iPads (vastly superior to pieces of paper for some
reason), but now those iPads have mysteriously been replaced through a
dome which is apparently impervious to nuclear weapons.

I have to say I soon lost patience with the silliness of it all so
I've no idea what they're doing now.

You are confused.

I started this thread branch. I am talking about portable
(including ultraportable) personal computers. The more
portable, the less power. It's a fact of computing.

True, but so what?

So, for the foreseeable future desktops will do much more than
portables. That is, given innovation, unlike Microsoft.

"Power" is a red herring.

Power is everything. And that applies to a myriad of portable
devices. Obviously that applies very well to computers. You should
learn something about the history of computing. Power has always
been the issue.

If you want to sell computers (or "devices"), you have to look
at what people in general do and want to do with them. Most
people neither need nor want the kind of power you are talking
about.

You appear to be blind to the fact that many tablet users complain
about poor battery life. It's a common complaint with portables.

As I said above, chess is an an excellent example... Chess would
be a great application for a touch screen tablet. I'm sure many
people do play on a tablet. But if you're any good and you want
the tablet to be competitive, as I said it's going to suck the
battery dry.

There are lots of power hungry applications, including very
important business applications. Doctors and lawyers are probably
clamoring for speech recognition on tablets like they use on
desktops. But it takes a lot of hardware overhead. And overhead
means power, computing power and therefore electrical power.

Again, many users complain about poor battery life. Anybody who
has at least one eye open should know that. Battery life is key
for a portable. It limits the applications to less CPU and
graphics intensive. It's a concrete fundamental limit that most
users would rather see change.

The Surface was avaialbel two years ago this month, the show hasn't been
on that long. It was meant to be a miniseries but its popularity keeps
it going. I don't know how long they can keep this going, surely it
can't last more than another season or two.

The reason that relic didn't have a battery is because the battery
would weigh more than the "portable" computer and a charge wouldn't
last long enough to be useful.

If you are as lame as this reply, you wouldn't know what to do with
more computing power...
