I did NOT get an error. Overall the whole big update downloaded and

completing the download and beginning to install. I don't think I've
ever seen one of these count down indicators ever work really well. I
sometimes wonder why they bother.

I didn't time it but the whole thing took quite a bit longer than your
typical average little update. I think patience is the key here.

I suspect that it may only update the percentage counter when a file has
completed its download.

So a lot of small files may look like a relatively well reported download
but a few big files may make the whole thing look as though it is stuck.

As you say, not a great deal of use.

Cheers

Dave R

Not totally useless - they serve as a standing joke around here :-)

November 2014 update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and
Windows
Server 2012 R2:

https://support2.microsoft.com/kb/3000850

See the article for new features and improvements.

Do you have to be logged in with a Microsoft account in order to
install this? Seems to me that I was logged in with my local account
when I upgraded to 8.1, so I don't know if that makes any difference
or not. That's the only reason I can think of for the continual
failure of this rollup.

Nope, never mind, that's not it.

Hi, SCTom

Is your Antivirus program AVAST. There are some reported issues that the
update fails when AVAST is installed.

See
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=160717.0

No, I'm using AVG. I'll try turning it off and see it that makes a
difference.

Nope, that didn't help either.

Are there any improvements besides security update? Any new features?

I don't normally install Microsoft updates but from time to time when
people report of problems then I try to install them to see if there is
really a problem.

AFAIKS, there is no problem but my machine is pretty much clean in that
I don't normally install any crap for fun. My anti-virus is McAfee and
it was on when I installed the patch manually. I never switch off
anti-virus.. If for some reason, the patch doesn't install because of
the anti-virus then you should start asking questions why. What is in
the patch that anti-virus is stopping it from installing.

The second half was done automatically by selecting just that update for
my machine.

The order of installation is as follows:

Windows8.1-KB2919442-x64.msu must but you might already have it on your
system
Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu must but you might already have it on your
system
Windows8.1-KB3000850-x64.msu

I didn't bother with others.

It had a lattč made and ready for me when I woke up this morning and it
made my wife, who was kind of portly and not handsome at all, into a
supermodel.

Other than that, nothing that I've noticed. (;

I already had the other two, so all I needed was the last third (since there
are three files). Maybe tomorrow I'll uninstall them and start over. Or not

Warning, does not play nice with Avast antivirus. It will break your box
(Uninstall and shutdown get disabled). There's supposed to be a fix to
Avast soon. I had to do a system restore to get my box back.

Gee.. Let's see here. 4 different win 8.1 machines here running 4
different antivirus programs and NONE had any problems with this
download. antivirus programs as follows

Avast free
Avg Free
Vipre
Norton

Just to note that on my three 8.1 systems it seems to have installed fine.

For those wondering about anti virus problems all 8.1 systems are
currently using Windows Defender.

My W7 box using Avast also seems to have updated without problems.

Cheers

You're lucky. Amongst many other forums with similar reports - 12 pages
in just one thread in the AVAST forum
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=160717.0

The issue is real.

The discussion makes it look like this is something that people are
proactively downloading and installing. Will this not also be available via
Windows Update at some point? Or if not the rollup in its entirety, perhaps
the functional equivalent in multiple smaller pieces?

Default November 2014 Windows 8.1 Update Rollup

Hi, Char.

Will this not also be available via Windows Update at some point?

Yes, of course. In fact, WU has already downloaded it for me and, when I
clicked the button, installed it on my computer, running Windows 8.1 Pro
w/Media Center, on November 19, two days ago.

For several years now, my WU setting hasn't changed. It is still, "Download
updates but let me choose whether to install them." This has always worked
very well for me. And I very seldom choose to NOT install any of them. I
can't make head nor tails of the "explanation" that is always offered,
anyhow. (Sounds like boilerplate that seldom says anything informative - or
specific to the current update.) If I install one and it doesn't work, I
can blame Microsoft; if I don't install a recommended update and my computer
dies, "I've got only me to blame 'cause Mama tried", as Merle Haggard sang.

This worked just as well, and in the same way, when I was running Win7.

When Patch Tuesday is coming, I often have it Check for Updates before I get
the automatic download, sometimes even a day or so ahead of time. I just
accept and install the available updates.

It's classed as an optional update. It may not show up for a while.
