Default Codec determination??

Hello group

I just reinstalled XP home and all software programs before the "crash". I
reinstalled every relevant video program, DirectX-9, Divx, etc. Just like I
had before. I edit in MediaStudio Pro. In the past I edited a lot of avi
and mpg, mpeg video. You can mix them in this program.

My problem is: preview of MPEG, or MPG is now gone in editing mode. AFter
I insert a video clip into the time line, I can only See .avi files. Any
mpeg files show only BLACK video. the sound portion is OK. This happens
even for the MPEG's I produced in this program before the system crashed.
It seems obvious to me that I am missing a codec of some type to play this
and see the video in MediaStudio.

My question, How can someone determine the coded need to play a particular
video format? Since the files only say .mpg or .mpeg, how can anyone tell
what codec is needed for them? there seems to be a gazillion codecs.

Also, these files will play in windows media player, so I also suspect it is
a strange setting in MediaStudio but I don't have a clue where it would be.

Any help is definitely appreciated. You can't edit if you can't see it!!!

GSpot is a great utility that lets you see what codec is needed for a file
and what ones are on your computer. A free download from

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
