Default windows 811493 update

As of yesterday, it is still listed as a fix. It was either listed as a
critical update or as a recommended update yesterday when I installed it.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811493

Is it recommended to be uninstalled by Microsoft?

ooop! you're right - I was looking under "critical" and it is still
under the 'xp ' list. - RM

It's listed as a Critical Update for Windows 2000 Server as of today. I just
uninstalled it then reinstalled it.

I had not used it because of seeing this thread. Now it
does not show up in the list. So I assume it has been
withdrawn. - RM

Hi

It was moved from the critical update list to the recommended update list at
Windows Update, at least for WinXP.

Yes, but that's not much help unless they've fixed it. Has it been - or are
they planning to?
At least they should have added a warning of possible subsequences, which
are insidious.

MS is working on the problem.

They did that April 23:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...n/MS03-013.asp

Revisions:

(snip)
V1.2 April 23, 2003: Added information regarding performance related issues
with Windows XP SP1 patch

V1.3 April 25, 2003: Added link to KB article that discusses performance
related issues with Windows XP SP1 patch

and the KB article mentioned in the V1.3 revision of the Microsoft Security
Bulletin MS03-013:

You May Experience Performance Issues After You Install the 811493 (MS03-013)
Package on Your Windows XP SP1-Based Computer

Sorry, Torgeir, I just delved deeper into "read more" - it's all in there if
you can find it.
I wonder how many people actually do read that, or just adopt the attitude
that "MS says I need it, so I'll download it".

Also, what happens if you have "Auto-download & install" enabled? Once
again. you have the symptoms. but don't know what's causing them.
IMO, because of that last possibility, MS should withdraw it until it's
fixed - after all, it's not Critical.

Are the ones listed in Recommended Update auto-downloaded & installed?

It's still a security update, and getting a performance hit on some computers are not a
good enough reason to pull it completely really. The move to the Recommended Update list
was the reasonable thing to do if you ask me. This way those who want it can install it.

Good question - I don't know, as I have it set to notify only, possibly not.

I just started watching this group so I do not have access to the beginning
of the thread.
I am unable to download 811493 on XP and hope that someone can shed some
light on what to do.
I have tried 3 times but to no avail.
Thankyou

Hi

Note that there are some issues with 811493:

You May Experience Performance Issues After You Install the 811493 (MS03-013)
Package on Your Windows XP SP1-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=819634

If you notice a system slowdown, remove it from Add/Remove Programs in the
Control Panel instead of doing a system restore. If you get a warning that
other installs may stop working if you remove it, just ignore it.

Back to your problem:

For get Windows Update to work again, renaming or deleting the Catroot2 folder
may solve the problem.

Go to http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;326815

Follow the steps 6 to 8 in the Resolution section of above link (do a reboot
first so the computer is "fresh" before you do the steps).

Then try to install the update again.

Disregard that the link above is for SP1, the Catroot2 problem is relevant for
other updates as well. The Catroot2 problem can be avoided by installing
Q817287.

Windows Update 643 Error and the Catalog Database
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;817287

If renaming or deleting the Catroot2 folder doesn't help, try this:

Check your "windows update.log" file for specific error code (the log file
is in your windows folder) and take look at this Web page:
