"Word" does not know how to left justifiy
**Not sure if anyone will notice, I posted again to
"Word Starter 2010 prints in grey, not black", up a few pages. Thread started on August 5. But new problem also. Using Word 2010 Starter, that comes with Win10. I had written my text in my email program Eudora and copied it in to an empty text template, "Blank Document". For some reason, text is right-justified. Click on ribbon button to make it left justified. But then Home and End button functions are reversed, Left and Righ arrows are reversed Selecting text that spans more than one line is messed up Problem all stems from template that is right-justified, even when new and empty. Even if I click on Left Justified when it's brand new and empty, and the Left-just button is "depressed", when I copy the text in, it goes back to right-justified. Other files copied from Notepad++ to Word don't show this, but copying from Eudora to Notepad++ and then to Word shows the same right justification and related problems. Anyone else ever see anything like this? Copying from Eudora to LibreWriter5 worked fine. |

Anyone else ever see anything like this? Copying from Eudora to LibreWriter5 worked fine. Highlight your text with your mouse. Then press ctrlL There might have been some slight difference between this and my previous tests, but basically, or entirely, ctrl-L gives the same results as clicking on the left-justify button. Left and right are reversed, Home and End are reversed. I also noticed that highighting everything and then deleting it, made the Right-Justify button appear depressed again, even though the Left was a moment earlier. This means there is something about the Blank Documents template that promotes R-Just, since that's the way it was when first brought up. But it works okay with two other documents from notepad++, so there must be something strange about the Eudora file, copied from an outgoing email. But that email shows the Eudora Left-Justify button depressed, and I know I didn't touch that set of buttons any time on this email, or for weeks preceding today. So it's some strange combination of two strange problems. Also take a serious look at LibreOffice before spending a dime on M$ Office http://libreoffice.org That sounds good. BTW, I had renamed the normal template, because I read online that that's the r eason the file was printing grey a week ago, and a new one was created, on 8/6. I looked back then but it hadn't happened yet. I haven't checked if it prints in black now, but I'm not optimistic, since it was renamed/recreated 3 years ago. Normal and blank documents are probably the same template. maybe I should try other templates and delete the parts that don't match my needs. When I have time. |

Using Word 2010 Starter, that comes with Win10. That doesn't come with Windows 10. Someone *bundled* that product with the instance of Windows 10 that they pre-installed for you. You bought a pre-loaded computer. Word Starter (part of "PC Essentials") works only on 32-bit versions of Windows and is ad-supported. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-...-pc-essentials In fact, Microsoft gives (or used to give) a licensing discount to OEMers to preload more Microsoft software on their pre-built and pre-loaded computers. https://www.zdnet.com/article/office...eloading-more/ You probably won't find many, if any, users of the Starter edition of MS Office. If they don't want to pay for MS Office but don't want a crippled lureware version of it, they get a free alternative, like LibreOffice. The PC Essentials components that are pre-loaded onto a pre-built will vary depending on the OS edition and what the OEMer wants to pre-load. The Starter editions are lureware. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/guide...tarter-edition "customers can easily switch to a full version of any one of the three Office 2010 products." If you don't want something bloated with features you don't use or you want something with a smaller disk footprint than the full MS Office (or even the Starter editions), there are lots of free office suites; e.g., Kingsoft Office, Softmaker FreeOffice, etc. If the Starter edition is ****ing up, you might want to cease fighting it and and use something else that does work. Just because it's free doesn't mean you must or even should use it. There are lots of free alternatives. I had written my text in my email program Eudora and copied it in to an empty text template, "Blank Document". For some reason, text is right-justified. You sure Eudora wasn't configure to compose e-mail in HTML format? Just because you see plain text doesn't mean there is no formatting on it. Try sending the test e-mail to yourself, and then look at the raw source of the message. Look for a MIME block that contains the "text" to see if it is within an HTML block and if there are HTML tags within it for formatting. Could be that "text" is within a MIME section for HTML-formatted content. Even if you configure Eudora to compose as plain text, you need to find out if the document it creates is actually just plain text, or plain text within HTML formatting. When you copy and paste that "text", the formatting could be coming along; however, trying to interpret HTML, especially if only part of it is included (which often happens you copy text as viewed, or select text instead of using Ctrl+A to select all) could result in the client trying its best to match the hidden formatting of the clip you are pasting. You did not mention in which language you are creating the test e-mail within Eudora that you then copy (to paste elsewhere). Are you using a language that reads right-to-left instead of left-to-right? Click on ribbon button to make it left justified. But then Home and End button functions are reversed, Left and Righ arrows are reversed Selecting text that spans more than one line is messed up Again, check what language is configured in the OS. Tis probably the same one being used by Eudora. Also check which keyboard type is configured in the OS. Problem all stems from template that is right-justified, even when new and empty. Even if I click on Left Justified when it's brand new and empty, and the Left-just button is "depressed", when I copy the text in, it goes back to right-justified. Possibly a configuration setting inside of Eudora. I don't use it. A long time ago, I trialed it (that was before they dumped their codebase and switched to a Thunderbird fork). Didn't like it as MS Outlook was superior (and I was willing to pay). Other files copied from Notepad++ to Word don't show this, Because those don't use HTML formatting when composing a document to show even so-called plain text content that Eudora might be using. Everything in e-mail is sent as plain text. Everything. All e-mail is composed as plain text. HTML is plain text as tags to delineate where formatting gets used, but it is still a plain text document and it's up to the client to decide how to interpret the HTML tags. Something showing just plain text might be hiding the HTML tagging. Eudora may have an option to compose as plain text; however, until you send it and then open that message to see its raw source, you won't know if there are HTML tags that were simply made invisible to you when composing. |

When I have time. try closing all your programs, then running winr shutdown /f /r /t 00 it will do a true shutdown and reboot. Then try it again. This is a YUGE issue if you have Fast Boot enabled (it is the default). If it works, get back to us for instructions on how to disable Fast Boot. |

I left a brief response in that thread that might show you a possible reason for printing in grey. My suggestion is how you can check that you have correctly selected how to print in BLACK - and not grey. The gist of my response was that you go to the toolbar that includes the letter 'A' and I think you mentioned it had a RED bar underneath the 'A'. My suggestion was that you left click on the downward facing arrow adjacent to this letter 'A' and then you see a set of colors from which you can choose the color you wish to use for printing. On my PC I can select BLACK on the left corner of the top row of colors and that will be the color that my document will print. On the bottom row of colors I have a selection of eight shades of grey, with each shade being 10% darker than the color immediately to the left so that the density ranges from a very pale grey to a shade which is almost black. My thoughts were that one of the pale shades of grey had accidentally been selected at some time in the past. |

I have little use for anything but the word processor, and when I need something elsse, I do have LibreOffice, and OpenOffice. If it is a retail version, yep, you can move it from XP to 10, but you lose the license on XP. If it is an OEM version, nope, it's stuck to XP. If you're asking about Word Starter, since it's free then licensing shouldn't be an issue, but I haven't looked at its EULA. Since you have LibreOffice, see if your "weird" document displays okay inside it. You could even see if WordPad will handle it. |

Another possibility is the printer (not the editor program) is setup to print in greyscale instead of black. This is outside of any editor program, so any of them would result in printing in greyscale with the printer configured to do so. Micky complained about printing in Word, but didn't mention if that's the only place where is the problem. For me under Win10 Home x64 1903, I click on the taskbar's search icon, enter "printer", select Printers & Scanners, click on my printer, click Manage, click Printing Preferences, select the Paper Quality tab, click the Advanced button, and check that "Print in Grayscale" is off. Software that comes with the printer might have its own grayscale setting, the the Windows navpath above might just end up at the same dialog as using the printer's software. |
