Check under Disk Management console to see if it's even "seen" by
Windows. If so it might be as simple as give it a drive letter. Do not
reformat it or anything stupid like that unless you don't care about
what's on it. Oh, and do a reboot before trying this just to insure it
ain't some Windows hiccup.

If that's no go, try it in another pc and see if it shows up there. If
not then it's probably redundant but you could also try booting with a
Linux Live CD as see if it sees the drive. If you ever do see the drive
trying running some SMART diagnostic utility on the drive to find out
some info about it's performance.

All that said, if it was working properly and suddenly stopped it's been
my experience drive is failing or has already failed. I've had a number
of them fail quickly e.g. copying became slow and just trying to figure
out why one could see it getting worse. Both Seagate and Western Digital
make checking warranty status fairly easy and they do the turn around
fast enough but data is gone.

First off, as mentioned...in the process of troubleshooting if you get a
message such as "drive is not formatted, do you want to format it?"

Do NOT do so.

First do the easy thing...try another USB port and try a different USB
cable.

If that does not good:

The drive *might* have failed however it's also possible the
electronics in the enclosure have failed or the power brick might have
failed.

Possibly the best thing to do is remove the drive from the enclosure and
install it as a 2nd drive in the computer.

Note: At least a few times I have seen failed "power bricks" that when
measured with a volt meter seem to be OK...but cannot hold voltage under
load

Good luck...there is a 50%+ chance the drive is still good.

Go to Control Panel Device Manager

Now look for something like this:

http://prntscr.com/8pb3sv

Device Manager http://i.imgur.com/9pAJKNc.png

Select the port that is likely to be the one that is not responding to
your storage and delete it from the list.

Shut down the machine and reboot and then see if the device is now
recognized. The deleted port will be recreated automatically.

Good luck.

After checking for loose connections, go to Disk Management, then
"Rescan Disks", then if offline reverse this to 'online'. Then the
Disk should appear in Windows Explorer.

Download a copy of "Drive Cleanup v 1.1.0" by Uwe Sieber, from his website:

http://www.uwe-sieber.de/drivetools_e.html

You must run this from a command prompt with administrative privileges. Read the instructions!

It will remove all orphaned USB drives and will most likely enable your machine to recognize the problematic
drives. Reboot the machine after running this utility.

If you have questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks to all who posted about my missing drive but nothing seem to work
I guess the drive is bad I will contact
and return it both drives were purchased from Dell. Thanks again

If there were data on the drive you need, Dell will not retrieve it for
you and it will be lost...

If that's the case I'd install it internally on your computer...there is
perhaps a 50% chance the drive itself is good...it could just as well be
the electronics or the power brick

OTOH: If there is no data on it you need and it's still under
warranty...then yes...return it. If you open the drive the warranty
would be void.

The drive that doesn't work was purchased in March 2015 it's still under
warranty and the laptop I am using is new so I really don't want to take
either one apart with my limited computer knowledge.

OK'

if it's a laptop it would be very unlikely you'd be able to install a
2nd drive ...only once have I seen a laptop with a 2nd HD bay.

Desktop...no problem

You can also take them to your local computer store and plug them into one of the display models. Some of the
display machines could be locked down, but maybe not. I would be shocked if both drives were defective unless
you dropped them both into the toilet or your pet elephant stepped on them.

Another VERY simple thing to try would be to start your machine from a Linux livecd, plug in the drives and
see if they are recognized. If they are recognized, you will know you have a Windows issue that must be
resolved.

Norman only one of the drives is bad the 2tb drive works great all my
backup's are on that drive just the 500 gb drive is bad. As far as a
local computer store I live in a very small town in southern Virginia
the nearest computer store is 100 miles away. I'll call Dell support
tomorrow I pay for premium technical support they have been so far very
good at fixing things,
