Black screen at Windows XP boot
I am having issues when booting Windows XP. It acts like it is going to
boot, but then goes to a black screen and just hangs up. F8 at start up will not work. I can not get to safe mood settings. Unfortunatley I can not find my Windows XP disk. Does anyone have a suggestion on how I would recover my system? |

Check the connections: data cables, power connections, and, ESPECIALLY, the memory chips. If the memory chip(s) is (are) not seated properly, you will get the symptoms you are reporting. |

True, but it's unlikely that any of those are the problem unless the computer has been jostled a lot, or unless a person has been playing around inside it. To the OP: make sure you begin tapping (don't hold it down) your F8 key when the computer starts POST - when it is counting the memory and recognizing the hard drives and CD/DVD drives. If your computer doesn't display that, start tapping as soon as it begins to display whatever screen your make/model shows at startup and BEFORE it shows that Windows is beginning to load. If you succeed in getting that to work, choose to load the last configuration that worked. If that fails, get into Safe Mode and try to run System Restore to get back to a point that is BEFORE all this began. -- Max |

"goes to a black screen" -what happens if you try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager? Try booting with only keyboard, mouse and monitor connected. -- Hope this helps. Black screen at Windows XP boot
I am getting calls from several users that they began getting the "Black
screen after boot" problem. It started yesterday 12/14/08. Definately not hardware - too many reports. Corrupted Windows Update? Virus? I to have encountered this and have been able to do a recovery to get it back. The only option I can think of is doing a reinstall, Just afraid of loosing all my data as xp is still new to me. |

Black screen at Windows XP boot
My computer has the same problem (Windows XP Home) and it also appeared on
December 14th. I posted a separate question about the problem before I found this thread. Anybody have information on the cause? Thanks! Anybody have information on the cause? You did the right thing the first time and the wrong thing this time. You *do* need to make a separate post of your own and not hijack someone else's thread. That way both posters can get the help they need. Please find your standalone post and see the detailed reply I gave you there. If you have further questions, keep them in that thread. I won't be monitoring this one. Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! FAQ - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/#FAQ |
