That happened to me recently. Drove me crazy when it happened, and it
wasn't all the time. New mouse solved the problem.

Default MS Mouse Driver

Downloaded MS Mobile Mouse 4000 driver from MS version 8. for Win XP
installed and it said that I needed to install a pre-8.x version.
Seems strange that MS web page selection for this mouse points to this
driver but is not the correct one.

Cannot find that 8.x driver.

Anybody know where to find it?

Default MS Mouse Driver

Sorry I guess I was not clear or I am not following you.

I need the MS Mouse Driver before the 8.0 version.
I do not know what that is. 7.something I would guess.

You did a lot of work for me and I thank you but I thing I was not
clear enough using the
8.x
to mean less than 8.x, like 7.something

Yeah MS abandoned us!

So why isn't a driver rated as "for WinXP" for WinXP ?
Did the message give any dependency, such as "you're running
SP2 so must use 7.x" ?

Here is another one, from a year earlier.

Version 6.31
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...6.31.258.0.exe

The Version number seems to jump from 6.31 to 8.x ?
I didn't see a 7.x ?

As I go forward in time, the revision of 8.x increases,
but the page still has one reference to 6.31. So my
guess is that 6.31 is the last one before 8.x stream
starts.

And I'm still skating around in the HTML code, so
there's no helpful hint as to what that's for.

Default MS Mouse Driver

Thank you!
Got 6.x (your link) and it has the exact driver for my mouse.
Works!

I am running latest XP. All of the updates.
Why Mouse drivr 8.x did not run I do not understand since it
specifically states Win XP 32 as compatible with Mobile Mouse 4000 but
as soon as installed and going to Control Panel/Mouse it says on the
first tab not compatible and get an earlier version.
