Default "No association" icon has changed on XP SP2

Hi
Usually when a file has no association in Windows XP, the icon used is a
default one (the program group icon on a document). However, upon
uninstalling HDDLife, the icons have been changed to a drive icon. How can
I change this? I have Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Open Regedit.exe and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Shell
Icons

Export the key and post the contents here.

Follow this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx

Download the PowerToy called TweakUI from the link above. After you have
installed it, run it and you should see a "Repair" option at the bottom of
the list on the left hand side of the main window. Click on repair, select
"rebuild icons" from the drop down list, and then click the "repair" button.
See if that works....

Did that, it rearranged my desktop icons and worked. Then when I restarted
machine, the "no association" icons were back to what they were previously
(showing an image of a drive). Did it several times, same result. Also
deleted the IconCache.db file (as per some Microsoft KnowledgeBase article)
within my profile (and other profiles too), no joy.

Test Man,

The value 0 is set to "C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\shell32.dll,0" which is
correct, but it's not needed (not present in a clean xp installation).
Perhaps you can try removing the value "0", and run a Repair again using
Tweak UI.

Nope, that doesn't work. It does bring back the right icon, but goes back
to the wrong icon upon reboot (like in my reply to brianb).

Very weirdly, just come back from the weekend and the icons seem to be back
to normal again. Thanks.
