Default Seagate 200GB SATA Hard Disk in Winxp Pro sp2....problem...

My problem is that, I bought a new 200GB SATA hard disk. My motherboard is no
built-in SATA connector, therefore I bought a PCI I/O SATA with RAID card. I
installed the driver, windows xp can recognise the hard disk, but cannot
format the hard disk.

I tried many software, even the software from official hard disk website.
While I format my hard disk, system hang, can't move....must press RESTART
button for reboot.

At last, I tried to go into safe mode, it works perfectly. It can be
formatted. No problem at all.

Now here is my problem, while I transfer files to the new hard disk under
normal windows mode. It HANG again.... need restart....press restart button.

So I have to go back safe mode transfer the files.....

I thought is the operating system got problem, so I format
windows....reinstall....
then.....same problem....sad...

A similar msg, same hd, was posted to windowsxp.basics today.
Was that you?

Hello:

I have just installed a new Seagate SATA 200GB hard drive (ST3200822AS) and
partitioned and formatted it with Partition Magic 8.0 into 3 separate
logical
partitions.

Ever since then, however, I have been getting several system failures (STOP
errors?) as I copied my files from my old hard drive to this new one.

Windows has also been almost consistently giving me a "Disk checking" screen
between the Windows XP loading (with logo and loading bar) and log-on
screens
that deals with "correcting errors in index (number) for file (filename)"
and
"recorvering orphane file (filename)". Disk checking deals solely with the
partitions on the new hard drive.

The Disk Checking screen has appeared not just once, but several times.

I am pretty sure that it's not my motherboard rejecting the drive, as it is
listed under my BIOS and Device Manger as "working properly". My primary
drive is also a Seagate SATA (ST380011A) and it's been working without
errors
since I purchased my computer more than a year ago.

I am also sure that it's not jumper settings, since SATA hard drivers don't
seem to deal with jumper settings like their IDE counterparts.

Did I do something wrong somewhere between physically installing the drive
and logically partitioning and formatting it?

I have already repartitioned and reformatted the drive from scratch a second
time to make sure that I didn't do anything wrong, but the problem continues
to persist. At this point, I am willing to lost all data on the new drive. I
just want to get it working.

end snip

Frankie, try moving the PCI SATA Card to a different PCI slot. Don't
connect the drive until you have the driver loaded for
the card. Make sure it shows up in Device Manager. No yellow marks next
to it.

Hi, Rich Barry....

I am so sad to tell you that.... it is not working.
I changed to another PCI slot, removed the SATA connection
cable....reinsatll driver... restart PC....shut down PC....plug back the
cable of the sata hard disk....

There is no any yellow mark show out. While I tried to move a 110MB file
into a partition..... HANG..... mouse cursor can't move at all.....

Sad.... anyway, appreciated for your suggestion...

Anyone got suggestion????

Frankie.... (sad)...

Try rt clicking MyComputerselect ManageDisk Management. See if the
drive shows up there and has a drive letter assigned to it. If not rt click
and choose Change drive letter and paths.

Interesting... I also have a problem with my new Seagate 200GB SATA. In fact,
I was the one whi posted the question regarding the hard drive causing stop
errors on my computer.

I've been monitoring my computer's condition for a few days now and the
"Disk Check" screens seem to have disappered for restarts. I don't know about
the stop errors, since I haven't dared to move my files onto the new hard
drive.

I wonder if I should repartition and reformat from scratch again using the
Disk Management.

Hi...Rich Barry,

Yes, I checked. System has assigned every partition with different drive
letter and paths....

same problem...HANG.....

the ONLY won't hang me around is under safe mode...
I am wondering is SP2 problem or not...if yes, then I would change back to
SP1... no point to use Sp2...since so many problems...

Thanks anyway..

Cheers..

Hello:

I am using SP2 and I did not do anything in safe mode.

How did you report to Seagate? Emailing their tech support? I've never tried
contacting Seagate before. What solutions did they give you?

Hi, antaresprime...

I emailed them, the technical operator replied my mail.
He taught me many ways....but no one can work...

Guess what. I solved my problem by myself.
I am very angry with the Seagate hard disk.... since it can work perfect
under safer mode.... meant it crash with somethings.... because under safe
mode, many drivers are stopped working...

Then, I tried to go back normal mode windows.... right click "my
computer"...go to "properties"... then "device manager"...

I try "disable" hardware function one by one for testing.... diasble one
then test... cannot...then disable one more, then test....

First I thought is graphic card...
who knows....

It crashes with my creative sound card!!!!
Sxxk!!!!
Fool me almost three days time......

Anyway... I am not sure, your problem is same as mines or not...
but may be you can try like my way...

Good luck!!!!

Cheers!!!

Hello:

Creative sound card eh? I also have a Creative sound card, Sound Blaster
Audigy 2 ZS to be exact, and I am running an ATI Radeon 9600XT video card.
Could those two be crashing my computer?
