Default XP Professionel Printer issue

I am fighting a printer issue. Believe I have tried most straight forward
fixes but none successfull.
My pdf writer is working but all other printing activities are failing.
Writing from adope it never hits the printer queue. Writing from Word I get a
pop-up "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup
- This error can appear if a default printer has not been designated or if
the application is unable to locate an existing default printer. To correct
this problem, try one of the following in Microsoft Windows:". None of the
suggested fixes work.

It seems to be not related to driver or wether it is through USB or Network.

Is it possible to reinstall only printer related XP. I have too much time
put into programs setup and dont want a complete re-install.
Hope some of you bright heads can help :-)
